Overview The role is for Northwest Texas Healthcare System, a 495-bed system serving Amarillo and the surrounding region. The facility offers a combination of traditional values with advanced technologies in healthcare, within a community-friendly environment.

Position Summary A Surgical Tech with extensive knowledge, experience, proficiency and/or certifications in perioperative technical skills who provides technical leadership in the care of the perioperative patient. Works under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, attends to the patient’s direct care needs, and acts as a primary preceptor for Surgical Technology Students, Techs, and Sr. Techs in developing direct care skills. Collaborates with a Registered Nurse; does not typically assume an independent assignment but demonstrates excellence in direct care of complex perioperative patients. Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives and supports Service Excellence standards.

Responsibilities

Assists the RN with implementation of an age-appropriate plan of care and tasks routinely delegated by the RN.

First and second scrub of simple uncomplicated surgical cases applicable to the Tech level.

Demonstrates knowledge and technical expertise regarding sterile processing.

Demonstrates knowledge and technical expertise regarding procedures, equipment, supplies, instruments, and surgical sequence for Tech level (see orientation checklist).

Demonstrates ability to adapt and learn new procedures using prior knowledge.

Assists the RN to provide a safe environment for patients, visitors, and employees.

Qualifications Education, Training, Experience and Licenses/Registrations Required

High School diploma or equivalent required

Was employed to practice surgical technology in a healthcare facility before September 1, 2009, or is in the service of the federal government to the extent duties relate to that service

Completion of a surgical technologist program with certification required

Two years surgical technology experience preferred

Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association upon hire or within 30 days of start date and maintain certification throughout employment (must be obtained prior to providing patient care)
