Job Summary Under the general direction of the Chief Veterinarian, the City of San Antonio’s Animal Care Services Department provides comprehensive veterinary care to companion animals, exotic pets, and livestock. The veterinarian performs examinations, vaccinations, spay and neuter surgeries, medical and surgical procedures, evaluates euthanasia, and works collaboratively with internal and external veterinary staff.

Work Location Animal Care Services, 4710 Highway 151n, San Antonio, TX 78227

Work Hours Five 8‑hour shifts (8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.) with two days off per week; weekends and holidays as required for operational support.

Essential Functions

Determine disease or injury at intake by examining companion, exotic, pocket, and livestock.

Triage, stabilize, and medically manage animals in critical condition.

Restore animal health by treating medically and surgically.

Lift and carry animals weighing up to 50 pounds and assist with team lifts over 50 pounds.

Ensure animals receive appropriate vaccinations and parasite preventatives.

Certify animals in rabies quarantine and prepare deceased specimens for state lab testing.

Medically evaluate impounded animals for adoption or euthanasia as warranted.

Oversee vaccinations, parasite control, and in‑house diagnostics.

Perform high‑volume spay and neuter surgeries.

Prepare and conduct in‑service training for staff.

Document cases of disease as required by the Texas Animal Health Commission.

Advise medical foster parents on nutrition, healthcare, and wellness care.

Respond to resident questions and concerns regarding medical services and public health.

Perform intake exams and necropsies for cruelty cases as needed.

Promote health of animals with sanitation, feeding, and general husbandry advice to shelter staff.

Testify in court on animal‑related cases as necessary.

Act as Chief Veterinarian in the absence of the Chief Veterinarian.

Requirements

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an accredited college or university.

Texas veterinary license in good standing.

DEA Registration Certificate in good standing.

Veterinary students in the fourth year of a U.S. accredited program may apply; must obtain Texas license and DEA registration before start date.

Veterinarians located out of state with a DVM and current DEA registration may apply; must obtain Texas license before start date.

Preferred Qualifications

Practicing veterinarian experience.

Experience performing high‑quality, high‑volume spay/neuter surgeries.

Two years of companion animal experience in a clinical setting, general practice, emergency clinic, or animal shelter.

Applicant Information

Two years of related full‑time experience may substitute one year of higher education or one year of higher education may substitute two years of experience for minimum requirements. One year of full‑time experience equals 30+ hours per week for 12 months; one year of higher education equals 30 credit hours at an accredited college or university.

Selected applicants must pass pre‑employment drug testing and background checks; additional checks may be required.

Military service applicants may attach a DD‑214 to the application.

Official transcripts, diplomas, certifications, and licenses must be submitted at the time of processing; unofficial copies may be attached for consideration.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of veterinary medical procedures, techniques, and practices.

Knowledge of state, federal, and local laws pertaining to animal control.

Knowledge of shelter medicine practices and public health/rabies education.

Knowledge of supervisory practices and animal immunology procedures.

Skill in performing high‑volume spay/neuter surgeries.

Ability to work under stressful situations and communicate effectively.

Ability to establish working relationships with city staff and the public.

Ability to perform veterinary medical examinations and determine euthanasia when appropriate.

Ability to perform all essential functions with or without accommodations.

Working conditions involve a clinic and kennel environment with frequent exposure to animal husbandry and zoonotic diseases.
