The Opportunity Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is seeking a Lab Manager to implement and coordinate all the engineering and design aspects of all research test set ups in designated CATER laboratories and facilities, provides technical and test systems in support in operations of all research projects. Maintain safety for staff, faculty and students participating in research projects.

Responsibilities

Provides technical expertise, analysis and judgment during proposal preparation and discussions with sponsors to resolve previously unknown research related safety considerations during project planning and execution for current and future research testing facilities and related components.

Adopts and implements existing safety protocols from other institutions, understands applicable safety codes (such as electrical, high pressure, chemical, emissions, toxic materials), guides test rig designs based on safety protocols/codes, updates current policies and drafts new safety policies as required to ensure all research conducted is completed in a safe for research testing facilities.

Provides research guidance on safety related elements for submittal to grant sponsors for potential future research awards and assists the proposal team to bring in new externally sponsored projects.

Works with students and researchers to maintain, repair and calibrate a diverse variety of equipment including standard electronic test equipment, fluid flow systems, heat transfer equipment, materials sintering devices, laser and mechanical measurement systems.

Inspects and evaluates work operations, production methods, and hazard controls to determine potential contaminant emissions sources or related health hazards associated with workplace conditions and creates standard operation procedures for each testing set up.

Monitors research testing participants and makes real‑time cautions to all personnel and makes adjustments to equipment and machinery as required, to prevent unsafe and hazardous conditions.

Manages workplace safety programs and provides equipment, chemical and propellant safety training to all employees and students and all other duties as assigned.

Conducts annual inventory of all equipment/assets, supplies and chemicals, and maintains professional appearance for all test set ups, laboratories and facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

MS (or Masters degree) in Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering or Mechanical or comparable Engineering.

Past work experience in research labs, that includes experience in ensuring safety, placing orders for lab/project supplies, order tracking, using hand and machine tools.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in designing and building test set ups for flow, thermal, chemical systems.

Experience in handling heat transfer equipment, materials sintering devices, laser and mechanical measurement systems.

Experience in helping in proposal preparation.

Working experience with students.
