Overview
Summary: Under general supervision of the Manager and Lead Technologist of Nuclear Medicine, and in accordance with established policies and procedures, performs a variety of technical tasks designed to facilitate Nuclear Medicine procedures by which physicians may diagnose and treat illness and injuries. Calculates correct dosage of radiopharmaceuticals and administers to the patient. Performs imaging scans using gamma cameras, SPECT/CT cameras and PET/CT cameras. Utilizes ancillary equipment required to perform diagnostic procedures. All essential functions reflect age specific needs of geriatric, adult, and pediatric patients. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health and Rhode Island Hospital mission, vision, and values, with consideration of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. Responsibilities
Explains the nature of each test procedure to the patient to allay fears and anxieties. Assists patient into the correct anatomical position for display of body areas to be studied. Calculates and administers correct dosages of radiopharmaceuticals, and administers by intravenous or intramuscular injection, ingestion, or inhalation of radioactive gases, to produce the desired concentration of isotopes in the specific organ system. Operates gamma cameras and scanners to produce diagnostic images of organ systems targeted by the radiopharmaceutical administered. Uses proper imaging and processing techniques to ensure examination results of desired quality. Calibrates and conducts quality control checks on all equipment used within the department. Performs administrative and clerical tasks with Nuclear Medicine such as preparing patient charts, scheduling tests, recording data or radiopharmaceuticals and calibration tests, and completing patient records in PACS and LifeChart. Participates in Nuclear Medicine training program by demonstrating and observing clinical techniques to students. Maintains order and cleanliness of examination and laboratories.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of accredited training program in Nuclear Medicine Technology is required. If the role requires operating SPECT/CT or PET/CT equipment, must be licensed for the practice of CT or Hybrid Imaging in the State of Rhode Island. Registry by at least one of the following: American Registry of Radiologic Technologists – Nuclear Medicine; Nuclear Medicine Technologists’ Certification Board. Current CPR certification from AHA, BLS for Healthcare Providers. Interpersonal skills to interface effectively with patients, staff, and physicians. Analytical ability to calculate and prepare radiopharmaceutical isotopes according to procedure requirements. Ability to operate modern Nuclear Medicine equipment; knowledge of aging processes and cultural patterns in care.
Experience
One to three months progressively more responsible job related experience is required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Regularly exposed to radioactive materials with low risk of injury when safety procedures are followed. Works in Nuclear Medicine department with potential heat from testing equipment. Requires considerable walking and standing. Physical ability to lift and/or position patients.

Pay Range: $44.67 - $86.16 Location: Rhode Island Hospital - 593 Eddy Street, Providence, RI 02903
