Summary
We are seeking a Substance Abuse Counselor to join our team in Newport News, Virginia. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of addiction and recovery processes, providing support and guidance to individuals struggling with substance use disorders. In this role, you will play a crucial part in supporting individuals struggling with substance abuse issues, helping them navigate their recovery journey while contributing to our mission of fostering healthy communities.
Responsibilities
Deliver Substance Use Disorder treatment under clinical supervision
Conduct face‑to‑face ASAM multidimensional assessment upon admission to determine and document a DSM5/ICD‑10 diagnosis and ASAM Level of Care placement decision collaboratively with the Clinical Director
Creates initial Individualized Service Plan (ISP) within 24 hours of multidimensional assessment and Comprehensive Individual Service Plan (ISP) within 14 calendar days of admission
Facilitate small group and educational group therapy sessions
Coordinate patient care with clinical team
Ensure and maintain the confidentiality and safekeeping of all client records and information related to treatment
Maintain professionalism in workplace including professional boundaries and codes of ethics
Participate in staff meetings and supervision meetings as scheduled
Ensure all agency policies and procedures as they pertain to client’s engagement in treatment are upheld
Develop effective working relations and cooperate with clinical team throughout the entire case management process
Provide continuity of care as evidenced by documentation of and communication with collaborative providers and agencies
Act as client advocate to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations
Perform other duties as requested
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of addiction and recovery processes, providing support and guidance to individuals struggling with substance use disorders
Candidates should have a background in behavioral health, social work, or a related field
A strong understanding of addiction treatment modalities and the ability to engage effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds is essential
Candidates must demonstrate empathy, patience, and excellent communication skills while fostering a nonjudgmental atmosphere conducive to recovery
Must hold a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) or be registered as a CSAC‑Supervisee or CSAC‑Assistant with the Virginia Board of Counseling
On‑site clinical supervision is available for CSAC‑Supervisees and CSAC‑Assistants pursuing full certification
Strong understanding of addiction recovery, relapse prevention, trauma‑informed care, and motivational interviewing
Preferred Experience
Group therapy facilitation

Medical documentation standards
License/Certification
