ISAC: Museum About the Department: The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures was founded in 1919 by James Henry Breasted with the support of John D. Rockefeller Jr. The Institute’s goal is to be a leading center for the study of ancient civilizations of West Asia and North Africa, combining innovation in theory and methodology with rigorous scholarship. The ISAC Museum opened to the public in 1931 and houses collections from expeditions in West Asia and North Africa during the 1920s–1940s. A complete renovation of the Museum was completed in 2019 in celebration of ISAC’s centennial. The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures is a unit within the University of Chicago. Job Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Director for Programs and Education and the Museum Director, the Volunteer and Art Program Coordinator will work with the Education team to coordinate the volunteer program, implement new gallery tours, and develop community programs by connecting with contemporary artists whose work relates to the ISAC Museum Collections. Responsibilities include coordinating the volunteer and docent program, recruiting volunteers, maintaining schedules, planning Volunteer Days, and communicating with volunteers through the Volunteer Voice newsletter. The role also involves implementing new gallery tours and developing connections with local artists to create engaging art programs within the community. Responsibilities

Liaise with the Docent Liaison to ensure smooth operation of the docent program and collaboration with department heads using volunteers. Advertise for volunteer and docent positions as needed. Assist in volunteer interviews and prepare related documentation. Ensure appropriate references and background checks where necessary. Correspond with volunteers via email or telephone. Ensure volunteers are on the Volgistics platform and the system is up to date. Liaise with the Youth and Family Program Coordinator and the Docent Liaison to schedule docents for K-12 tours via Volgistics. Arrange booking and administration for adult guided and self-guided tours. Write the monthly Volunteer Voice newsletter. Update mailing lists. Plan the monthly Volunteer Days. Communicate tour openings to active docents at least two weeks prior to tour dates to encourage sign-up. Help plan and facilitate docent training sessions. Research and foster links with local artists connected to ISAC Museum collections. Develop art programs that engage the local community and broaden understanding of ISAC, especially in the South Side of Chicago. Support planning and implementation of education outreach programming and perform related administrative duties with supervision. May create and coordinate dissemination of communications materials. Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Vocational training, apprenticeships, or equivalent experience in a related field (not typically requiring a four-year degree). Work Experience:

Experience: 2–5 years of experience in volunteer management, outreach, and community engagement. Experience working with diverse communities. Strong teamwork and organizational skills. Energetic self-starter with a strong work ethic. Administrative experience with high computer literacy. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Proven success in recruiting and supporting volunteers. Experience working with volunteers in a museum or heritage setting. Knowledge of volunteering best practices and rotas. Experience with visual arts and running community art projects. Technical Skills or Knowledge: MS Office proficiency. Experience with volunteer management software (e.g., Volgistics). Experience with graphic design software (e.g., Canva). Experience with mailing list platforms (e.g., MyEmma). Preferred Competencies: Ability to adapt to change and work in a dynamic environment. Working Conditions

Hybrid schedule with weekly in-office presence and one day remote. Standard office environment. Occasional evenings and weekends as needed. Application Documents
