FWC Fish & Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI), Ecosystem Assessment & Restoration Section, invites applications for a full-time Career Service (CS) Assistant Research Scientist to serve as a co-PI of the Coral Reef Evaluation & Monitoring Project (CREMP), supporting programmatic and operational needs of the project. Minimum Qualifications
7 years of professional experience in a closely-related biological field or laboratory program is required. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and three years of professional experience in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics; or a master's degree with two years of professional experience; or a doctorate in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics can substitute for the required experience. Preferred Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates with the following qualifications: A master's degree in marine biological sciences and three years of professional experience related to the position responsibilities and duties. A doctorate in one of the biological sciences. Experience leading and implementing coral research and/or monitoring projects and a publication record of peer-reviewed manuscripts. Requirements:
Employment in this position is contingent upon a satisfactory Level 1 background check at no cost to the candidate. Office hours are 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Position Overview : Serve as a lead researcher for the FWRI Coral Research Program and provide scientific support to long-term monitoring programs and coral research projects conducted by the FWRI. Visit the program’s website for more information. Responsibilities and duties include: Serve as the co-PI of CREMP in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) and Dry Tortugas. Directly assist the CREMP PI with administrative, field, and data tasks. Assist with deployment of CREMP protocols and standards to ensure data collection and entry by all team members; update QA/QC protocols as specified. Provide technical assistance and guidance for identification and taxonomy of coral reef organisms; lead training for field surveys. Organize and disseminate CREMP data to make datasets publicly accessible and to fulfill reporting deliverables to agencies. Perform statistical analyses of project data and create summary tables/graphics for annual reports, manuscripts, and presentations. Write and co-author proposals, progress reports, comprehensive reports, and peer-reviewed publications. Prepare and present at scientific meetings, stakeholder workshops, and professional conferences. Develop cooperative relationships within the Institute, with other divisions, and with external organizations to expand CREMP and related coral research objectives. When necessary, serve as a coral subject matter expert on review panels and provide technical guidance on coral reef issues and policies. Additional duties include conducting in situ demographic surveys of corals and sponges, participating in data collection following demographic protocols or using underwater photography/videography, and training field survey teams. Identify reef organisms from site observations or images, supervise coral support staff, and ensure compliance with Commission and FWRI rules. Serve as FWRI Project Manager for SECREMP (Southeast Florida Coral Reef Evaluation and Monitoring Project). Manage grants and subcontracts, assist with statistical analysis, contribute to reports and manuscripts, and ensure timely deliverables. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Coral reef taxonomy and systematics; coral reef ecology; marine experimental design; coral and benthic data collection; multivariate statistics and software; SCUBA principles and diving safety; Microsoft Excel, Word, Teams. Skills:
Synthesizing large datasets; scientific writing; statistical analysis; study design; team management; SCUBA diving and underwater navigation. Abilities:
Write and communicate effectively; complete tasks timely; plan and implement projects; coordinate work; work as part of a team; supervise and mentor staff; identify reef organisms; participate in field work requiring swimming or SCUBA; travel for field expeditions; meet AAUS standards and obtain NITROX certification.
