Penn State University

Overview The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Heart and Vascular Institute, in Hershey, PA is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar in Dr. Shyam Bansal’s laboratory to study the role of inflammatory immune responses in mediating cardiovascular diseases. Our laboratory uses multidisciplinary approaches to study the role of different immune subsets in regulating left-ventricular remodeling and cardiac dysfunction during heart failure. Our research spans from human to animal studies, employing imaging and electrophysiologic techniques such as flow cytometry, vesicular analysis, and echocardiography.

Responsibilities

Perform small animal cardiac structure and functional analysis and conduct coronary ligation surgeries, including independently performing small animal echocardiography, real-time measurements of function using 2D, M-mode, and Doppler technology, and data analysis; tissue harvesting, staining and flow analysis for immune cell subsets; data analysis; manuscript/grant writing; and isolation and analysis of exosomes.

Maintain cell lines, perform pharmacological assays with a microplate reader, and perform Western blotting and quantitative RT-PCR assays.

Independently monitor and oversee animal lines including transgenic mouse colonies, employing gel electrophoresis and PCR techniques; analyze and plot data from the assays.

Provide training to other technicians to ensure proper execution of duties.

Analyze data and present results in formal presentations, manuscripts, and grant applications.

Qualifications

Effective knowledge of lab practices and procedures in animal handling, dissection, Western blotting, PCR, fluorescence imaging, sub-cloning, and transfection.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; perform routine duties using established procedures with coordination and effective communication with the PI.

Strong teamwork and leadership skills; ability to develop and implement laboratory policies and update SOPs to ensure safe practices.

Excellent oral and written communication skills for projects, manuscripts, and grant preparation.

Innovative problem solving and ability to optimize experimental procedures with novel approaches.

Education Requirements The successful candidate will possess a doctoral degree with expertise in molecular biology, experience with in-vivo and in-vitro models of inflammation, and experience with flow cytometry. Experience with cell culture techniques and isolation and culture of primary cells is essential.

Application Instructions Highly motivated candidates should apply online by uploading a cover letter describing relevant experience, current curriculum vitae, and the names of at least 3 references.
