Purpose The Police Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, staff and all UPMC-owned and adjacent properties. Enforces UPMC rules and regulations, patrols hospitals and associated areas, deters criminal activity, investigates events, documents activities, and takes appropriate police action when necessary. Monitors security, fire, and environmental alarms; responds to and resolves problems and disputes; provides customer service to patients, families, visitors and staff; serves as a first responder to violent acts at UPMC locations. Officers are armed with a firearm and may act as shift supervisors, organizing and guiding daily operations of the department.

Responsibilities

Handle evidence control pertaining to UPMC-initiated criminal investigations.

Respond to acts of extreme violence requiring deployment of deadly force as dictated by UPMC policy.

Support various investigations with system-wide implications.

Carry, properly handle, and deploy a firearm.

Issue PA state citations for certain offenses using law enforcement applications (e.g., PA Justice Network).

Investigate incidents reported by staff, visitors, physicians and patients.

Perform as a Security Officer when necessary.

Escalate problems and concerns to management.

Transport individuals subjected to criminal arrest and prosecution.

Serve legal documents such as arrest warrants and subpoenas when required.

May serve as shift supervisor and lead daily operations, organize and assign work, and train staff on duties.

Provide support at various UPMC facilities with knowledge of facility layout and site-specific policies.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent.

MPOETC Act 120 basic training or equivalent (PA State Police Academy, out-of-state academy) OR Police Officer training as mandated by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers, OR Federal Agent (e.g., FBI, DEA, Secret Service, U.S. Marshal, VAMC), OR Military Police Training, OR five years of prior law enforcement experience including firearm use and annual training.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact, communicate, and diffuse combative situations with diverse individuals.

Psychological fitness to handle stress and potentially dangerous conflict situations.

Physical fitness to meet demands of crisis interventions and medical emergencies.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

All applicants subject to thorough background and criminal record check; must be available for all shifts; officers may be required to wear a bulletproof vest.

Must be able to perform as a security officer when necessary.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

Act 235 with Firearms – completion of both academic and firearms training prior to hire; must meet audio and visual standards.

Complete UPMC Police Training upon hire and all mandated weapon and firearms training.

Meet UPMC Physical Fitness Standards and pass related tests (includes chasing, apprehension, and subdue procedures).

Good hand/eye coordination and ability to pass vision and hearing tests with correction.

Driver's License.

Act 235 with Firearms renewal; Act 31 (Child Abuse Reporting) renewal; Act 33; Act 34; Act 501; Act 73 FBI Clearance renewal.
