Position Description
The Lecturer of English is a full-time faculty position within the College of Arts and Humanities. The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, service, and advising while maintaining academic competence as an instructor of writing. As a faculty member, the successful candidate’s primary responsibilities will involve teaching traditional (in person) writing courses (ENGL 102 and 100) with opportunities for online teaching in the summer based upon need. This position also includes overseeing the management (recruitment, hiring, scheduling, mentoring, evaluating, etc.) of the writing adjuncts. Thus, the faculty member will have a background in writing pedagogy, including experience with developmental writers.
Candidates for this position should be enthusiastic supporters of Eastern University’s General Education program and how writing supports the success of students across the university.
Responsibilities
The Successful Candidate Will
teach a course load (typically 24 credits) for the English Department with ENGL 102 and ENGL 100 being the primary teaching assignments as part of the university’s general education program (on-ground). oversee the management (recruitment, hiring, scheduling, mentoring, evaluating, etc.) of the writing adjuncts. remain competent and conversant with writing pedagogy, including how the impact of A.I. on the teaching and learning of writing courses. fulfil expectations for faculty scholarship and creative/professional endeavor as required for a full-time faculty member. serve as a faculty advisor for assigned students, assisting in mentoring and oversight of advisees’ progression toward degree completion. undertake all service requirements, including university committees, assignments, and functions (e.g. participating in graduation exercises) required of a full-time faculty member. They will also participate in academic department and college meetings. provide support Eastern University’s commitment to faith, reason, and justice.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess an advanced earned degree (MA, MFA, PhD, or equivalent). Applicants should exhibit evidence of outstanding teaching, scholarly and professional excellence, and a passion for writing pedagogy. Applicants should demonstrate excellence teaching writing to students across the academic spectrum (including developmental students). Applicants should be adept in creating and teaching on-ground and online courses. Applicants should possess proficiency (or ability and willingness to acquire proficiency) in online learning tools and software platforms. Applicants must be able to sign Eastern University’s doctrinal statement, be an active member of a Christian church, and be pursuing a robust life of faith.
