The County of Mono is now hiring to fill a vacant Deputy Sheriff position. The vacant position will be a lateral hire, starting as a Deputy Sheriff I/II. Under supervision, perform law enforcement, crime prevention, and crime detection activities; occasionally guard and supervise inmates in County Jail facilities; act as a bailiff; may be assigned operations supervision. May be assigned to work as an undercover narcotics officer; may be assigned to train new deputy sheriffs; perform Coroner’s investigations/duties, and do related work as required. This class is the journey-level sworn class in the Sheriff’s series. Incumbents rotate through various assignments and are expected to learn and perform the full range of duties required and complete the applicable probationary period. Perform a variety of assignments including Patrol, Bailiff, Civil Deputy, Crime-Scene Investigator, Identification Technician (photographer), and Deputy Coroner. As a Civil Deputy, receive records, serve civil processes, and maintain related records and collections. As a Bailiff, attend all sessions of the Superior Court, serving the Superior and Municipal Court Judges. As a Crime Scene Investigator, assist in initial crime scene investigations, evidence collection, and documentation. As an Identification Technician, operate and maintain photography and evidence processing equipment. Prepare reports of arrests, investigations, and incidents. While on patrol, enforce laws, warn drivers, issue citations, and make arrests as necessary. Serve warrants, subpoenas, and civil documents. Analyze situations and make independent decisions in the field. Understand and execute oral and written instructions, regulations, and policies. Knowledge of : Rules and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office and jail operations. Criminal and traffic laws, apprehension, search and seizure, and evidence rules. Laws related to juveniles. Operation of firearms and law enforcement equipment. Ability and willingness to (partial list) : Observe accurately and remember details. Control and instruct inmates. Follow and implement directions and policies; write clear reports. Understand laws and regulations; act quickly and judge situations accurately. Meet physical standards set by Mono County. Requirements include a High School diploma or equivalent, valid California Driver’s License, and for lateral candidates, graduation from a POST-certified Basic Training Academy with a POST Certificate.
