ABOUT OUR DISTRICT
The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent of Schools with improving student achievement, and he is seeking a dedicated team of school leaders and teachers to partner with him in moving the district toward its goals.
ABOUT THIS POSITION
The District is moving towards a
Special Patrol Officer
model for middle level and K-8 Schools. The District Special Patrol Officers (SPOs) would be referred to as
Community Safety Agents (CSAs)
to more accurately reflect their role within the greater school community. SPOs would initially be hired as a Special Patrol Officer, through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Syracuse Police Department, with the District scheduling and interacting with agents. The SPOs would be assigned at the middle school level, including K-8 Schools and as mobile support. They would maintain a uniformed presence and assist staff and students. The SPOs would possess New York State Peace Officer powers and be available to respond without delay to any potential threat, incident or emergency. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provides protection for the District students, staff and greater school community. Enforces the District public safety/security program and the laws of the State of New York. Maintains order through a uniform presence on the school campus at all times. Responds to campus emergencies and provides First Aid/CPR as needed. Patrols buildings, grounds and parking areas to maintain order, protect persons and property. Secures and checks all doors, windows and entrances to buildings. Completes Administrative Entry Searches for weapons as per established procedures. Controls and directs traffic on campus or adjacent roads. Investigates motor vehicle accidents that occur on campus. Coordinates with juvenile justice support agencies. Issues parking violation tickets; actively monitors area for safe routes to school. Provides law enforcement guidance to students, staff and administrators. Provides assistance and training to students, faculty and staff. Consults with building administrators regarding the status of the campus public safety/security program. Prepares records and reports related to the work performed. QUALIFICATIONS Good knowledge of procedures and practices for protecting and safeguarding buildings and property. Good knowledge of the powers of a peace officer. Ability to maintain order and perform first aid. Ability to exercise judgment in stressful situations. Ability to carry out established security procedures in emergencies. Ability to observe detail and evaluate situations. Ability to understand and apply information, rules, and regulations. Ability to prepare brief written communications. Ability to communicate information orally. Ability to use self−defense and security equipment. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Retired member of a police or sheriff's department, or division of state police, or retired former corrections, parole or probation officer. Subject to New York State Education Department fingerprint Background Check Clearance for appointment. SALARY: $45.00 per hour Full and part time positions available in regard to work week, we will accept candidates for 2 to 5 days per week, to provide coverage to the schools.
