Overview Special Victims Unit Detective – Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) assignment for the City of Surprise, AZ. Requires extensive experience in child abuse, sexual abuse, sex trafficking and/or internet crimes against children.

Responsibilities

Patrol the City in a radio‑equipped vehicle; respond to calls for protection of life and property; enforce City, County and State laws.

Conduct preliminary and follow‑up investigations of disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, robberies, death and other criminal incidents as assigned.

Coordinate and conduct complete detailed investigations of all crime activity; preserve evidence at accident scenes; lift fingerprints; take photographs.

Makes arrests, interviews victims/complainants/witnesses, interrogates suspects, transports prisoners, testifies and presents evidence in court.

Serves warrants, subpoenas; file complaints and perform other work related to processing misdemeanor and felony complaints.

Cooperates with other law enforcement agencies on matters related to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses.

Prepares reports of arrests made, crimes investigated and unusual incidents.

Stops drivers violating traffic laws; issues citations and apprehends suspects as necessary.

Maintains contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserves good relationships with the general public.

Work any post, assignment or shift to support the 24‑hour per day, 7‑day a week operation; adjusts schedule to accomplish a mission or operational need.

Works mandatory overtime as required.

Cultivate inclusive and respectful working relationships that support a sense of belonging for all employees and community members.

Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.

Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.

3 years special investigations detective experience including child abuse, sexual abuse, sex trafficking, and/or internet crimes against children.

Successful investigation and prosecution of an applicable case.

Must have and maintain a valid Arizona driver license at the time of hire.

Must be a Certified Police Officer at the time of application.

Knowledge of offensive and defensive weapons nomenclature and theory; self‑defense tactics; interview and interrogation techniques; community policing methods and techniques; constitutional law, Arizona State criminal and traffic laws.

Skill in using computers and related software applications; using modern office equipment.

Ability to apply police methods and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation and identification techniques; record keeping and first aid techniques.

Comprehend criminal law and procedure; observe accurately and remember faces, number, incidents and places.

Use and care for firearms; think and act quickly in emergencies; render credible testimony in a court of law.

Prepare accurate grammatically correct written reports; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and written.

Understand and interpret laws and regulations; maintain moral standards and integrity.

Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.

Act quickly under pressure and make appropriate judgment; keep privileged information confidential; work effectively under stress.

Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.

Enter data into a computer; communicate interactively with coworkers, supervisor and the general public.
