Senior Coder - Inpatient (Remote) at ChristianaCare. This full-time, remote coding role requires accurate and timely assignment of ICD 10 CM/PCS and HCPCS/CPT codes, payment group classification, and data abstraction for reimbursement and statistics for Inpatient, Outpatient, Emergency Medicine, Ancillary and Diagnostics records. ChristianaCare is seeking a full-time Senior Coder to be responsible for accurate and timely assignment of ICD 10 CM/PCS and HCPCS/CPT codes, payment group classification, and data abstraction for reimbursement and statistical reporting for all patient records handled by the Health Information Management System (HIMS) Department. Must meet or exceed productivity and accuracy standards outlined in the HIMS Coding Policies and Procedures. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Review and interpret Inpatient, Outpatient, Ancillary, Diagnostics and Emergency Medicine or other patient records to assign appropriate ICD 10 CM/PCS diagnosis and procedure codes and/or HCPCS/CPT procedure codes as required. Perform coding and abstracting tasks to support accurate and timely billing, data quality, statistics, and severity of illness and risk of mortality reporting. Follow UHDDS definitions, CMS regulations, and Official and Internal Coding Guidelines. Utilize information from diagnostic reports (radiology, pathology, EKG, labs, orders, and medications) to code patient charts in accordance with Official Coding Guidelines. Complete daily work assignments as directed by Coding Support. Work within service line structure where applicable based on patient type. Mentor newer coders or those in training for a new coding discipline. Abstract and sequence codes for diagnoses and procedures and enter information into the coding system. Use the coding system as a communication tool, place accounts on hold to ask questions and initiate queries as needed. Receive feedback and review charts with Coding Management for accurate code assignment. Provide coded and abstracted information needed for final coding and billing within productivity expectations to support DNFB and bill hold metrics. Review prepopulated demographic information fed via HL7 and make necessary data changes for accurate posting to the billing system. Utilize coding systems to calculate inpatient encounters in MS-DRG and APR DRG groupers for accurate severity of illness and risk of mortality reporting; sequence CPT codes to align with APC grouper methodology. Submit timely, accurate daily productivity reports in accordance with department policy. Attend and participate in coding section and department meetings, trainings, and workshops. Report errors identified in patient identification, account, or encounter information as noted during daily work. Support the Coding Management team on special coding projects. Collaborate with HIMS management and IT teams on IT initiatives, systems testing, and report reconciliation as needed in coding and billing systems. Work with HIMS Coding Support Team to achieve revenue cycle goals, including addressing aged coding accounts and reviewing system reports and queues. Education and Experience Requirements
CCS credential required. College degree in Health Information Management, completion of AHIMA-approved certificate program, or one-year coding experience in acute care (Inpatient, Observation, Emergency Medicine, or Same Day Surgery) required. Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Technology preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Christianacare Offers
