Our Safety Engineering and Planning Section is seeking a Transportation Engineer. As the Countermeasure Engineer, your primary focus will be on implementing safety engineering principles and practices to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on Iowa’s roadways.
Team We are a dynamic group of inspired individuals who enjoy the challenge of making Iowa highways safer while also providing efficient operations. We are looking for a professional engineer, or soon-to-be professional engineer, who wants to make a difference and to be a leader in the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT). We need a detail-oriented person who enjoys challenges, problem-solving and working with people. Frequent collaboration with DOT staff, local officials, the public, consulting engineers, university researchers, federal agencies, and traffic safety engineering peers throughout the nation requires great communication skills.
Position Responsibilities and Opportunities Will be to provide transportation safety engineering support to DOT Bureaus and Districts, other state agencies, as well as to local units of government across the state.
Additional duties include, but are not limited to:
Managing safety improvement programs by:
working with agency staff to develop projects addressing safety issues
administering grant applications and awards
Managing the access management program by:
administering the Access Management Manual use
coordinating with District access permit reviewers
Assisting in crash data analysis by:
evaluating the effectiveness of safety-specific projects
conducting safety studies screening the network for issues
Providing technical expertise on specialized areas, which include rumble strips, pavement markings, shoulders, safety edge, intersection configurations, and others

8:30 am-5:00 pm Monday through Friday; flexible scheduling is available
Travel:
This position occasionally requires some overnight travel
