Residence Director - Two Positions Available
Location: Syracuse University Pay Range: $62,400 Pay ranges at Syracuse University are based on a combination of factors including, but not limited to, the job responsibilities; the candidate’s education, training, work experience and key competencies; the university’s strategic priorities; internal peer equity; applicable federal, state, local laws, grant funding and contractual requisites; and external market analyses. Staff Level: S5 FLSA Status: Exempt Hours: Standard University business hours. 8:30am – 5:00pm (academic year); 8:00am – 4:30pm (summer). Hours may vary based on operational needs. Job Type: Full-time (12-month live-in position) Campus: Syracuse University Unionized Position Code: Not Applicable Job Description The Residence Director engages in operational, administrative, and programmatic initiatives for Student Living. This is a full-time, exempt status, professional staff member. This position is a 12-month live-in role responsible for the management of a residential community housing 250 to 1000 students, to which they are assigned and report to an Assistant Director. Responsibilities include educational, managerial, and administrative functions to provide an environment supportive of the University’s mission and vision. This includes implementation of Student Living’s curriculum; supervising student leaders; crisis intervention; participation in on-call; resolution of violations of Student Living policies; implementing programs designed to assist students in transitioning to campus living; and other duties as assigned. This is a highly visible position with students and staff, providing day-to-day support to students, student employees, and multiple levels of staff. This position is critical to ensure that students living on campus have residential staff committed to their needs and development. Education and Experience
Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education, or related field is preferred. Evening and weekend commitments are expected. Residence Directors must reside in their provided on-campus apartment. Candidates should have previous residence hall or student advising experience and have confirmed skills in mediation, crisis intervention, problem solving, and decision-making. Demonstrated potential to supervise paraprofessional staff and experience in at least two of the following: counseling, advisement, programming, student development, housing operations, residence hall safety and security, public relations, or summer programs. Other relevant experiences, including degrees in related fields, will be strongly considered. Skills and Knowledge
Knowledge of student development, counseling and/or event management. Strong ability to handle multiple priorities and work across constituencies. Commitment to developing a welcoming residence hall community with cultural competency. Responsibilities
Utilize a residential curriculum framework to foster student learning, development and engagement. Assist RAs in assessing resident needs and developing floor programs. Advise student organizations, supported by theory and best practice. Advise students on personal, social, and academic concerns; refer when appropriate. Mediates a range of student conflicts and supports inclusive communities. Participate in development and implementation of residential learning communities. Collaborate with Learning Community staff to develop, implement, and attend programs and Team Meetings. Participate in departmental training and debriefings, including inclusion-focused activities. Train, supervise, and participate in evaluation processes with 8–21 paraprofessional staff and possibly a Residence Hall Operations Coordinator. Hold regular hall staff meetings and conduct one-on-one meetings with Resident Advisors. Communicate student rights and responsibilities; adjudicate code of conduct violations when needed. Provide staff coverage including emergency duty during the year, and support hall openings, closings, and university vacation days. Handle emergencies using crisis intervention skills and resources. Serve in an on-call rotation with other Professional Staff for approximately 1,800–2,500 students. Ensure hall staff has knowledge of procedures, policies, and practices essential to hall operations. Manage hall/complex through weekly walkthroughs and coordinate with maintenance and custodial staff. Manage the programming and operation budget for the hall; participate in meetings and trainings. Establish a Residential Work Hours schedule appropriate for a student-facing role; schedule hours to meet student needs on and off-campus. Maintain a visible and active presence in residence halls. Serve as a member or co-chair on departmental committees; may work with summer programs or summer school housing. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Director and/or Leadership Team. Physical Requirements
