Senior Minister Job Description
Purpose of Position:
To provide pastoral leadership ultimately responsible for the local ministry, mission objectives, and strategic planning of the church in conjunction with the Church Board.
Responsibilities:
Provide spiritual leadership to the congregation demonstrated through Biblical understanding and personal life
Provide teaching to congregation by holding primary pulpit responsibility and leading classes/Bible studies
Develop and empower lay leaders for the ministries of the church
Demonstrate and implement a clear understanding of the requirements of future growth
Communicate plans effectively to develop consensus and unity
Major Duties:
Preaching and Teaching
Allow adequate time for study to prepare sermons that teach and inspire
Provide Bible studies to various congregational groups at various times
Leading the congregation in spiritual development
Pastoral Care
Provide pastoral counseling and spiritual guidance to church and community members
Perform baptisms and associated preparation
Call on the hospitalized, shut-ins, and institutionalized of the church (in coordination with lay leaders)
Contact family members when there has been a death for spiritual support and perform funerals
Perform premarital counseling and weddings
Intergenerational Ministries
Provide pastoral leadership as it relates to planning, coordinating, and implementing intergenerational activities that create relationships between children and youth with adults (e.g., mission trips, local service opportunities, prayer partners, etc.)
Supervise, coach, and support Children and Youth Ministry volunteers and paid staff (including nursery, Children’s Church worship leader, youth director, etc.)
Support of church leadership
Participate in committee meetings as needed including Property, Worship, Education, Membership, Hospitality, Outreach, and Pastoral Relations
Attend all Church Board Meetings possible and present a report on activity
Coordinate with appropriate elders regarding deaths, illness, hospitalizations, or prayer needs
Provide study and equipping to church leaders as needed
Administration
Oversee production of the newsletter, bulletin, and other documents of the church
Supervise and coordinate with all church staff, including Office Administrator, Music Director, Organist, Custodian and other positions within the church
Represent the congregation to the broader church including the Regional Church and/or ecumenical events, workshops, conventions, or committees the church finds appropriate
