Overview

We are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician whose primary role is to provide technician/clinical support to physicians by performing patient work-ups and diagnostic testing. The position also requires supporting the Clinic Manager, reviewing and responding to in-basket messages from patients, addressing requests for prescription refills, completing forms, and assisting to obtain prior authorizations from insurance carriers. Records patient history including chief complaint, ocular history, past surgeries, medical conditions, medications, allergies, learning assessment, falls risk, and family history. Checks pupil response to light and afferent pupillary defect. Measures central visual field using Amsler Grid; measures and records distance and near visual acuity. Measures and records intraocular pressure using applanation tonometry, pneumatic tonometry, or Schiotz-type tonometer. Performs Humphrey visual field testing and refers patients for further testing where appropriate. Performs OCTs and IOL Master measurements to prepare patients for cataract surgery. Performs accurate refractions; tests color vision and depth perception; screens for ocular motility disorders. Uses slit lamp to examine eye surfaces; performs related testing such as Bright field Acuity Testing, Potential Acuity Meter, and pachymetry. Performs basic maintenance or repair of clinical equipment; compiles and enters data for clinical studies and may participate in other clinical research projects. Performs ultrasound scans by measuring the axial length of the eye using A-Scan units; recognizes difficult scans and adjusts the unit as needed in complex cases. Calculates intraocular lens power using various formulas to fit patient needs, either manually or by computer. Assists with in-office procedures; processes refill requests; maintains exam room supplies and ensures medication expiration dates are current. Maintains and sterilizes instruments; disinfects and maintains examination rooms; follows microbial control fundamentals; complies with JCAHO requirements. May teach patients to insert and remove contact lenses and proper handling techniques. Ophthalmic Technician – Nonclinical

Duties may include, but are not limited to: reviews and responds to in-basket messages and answers patients’ clinical questions. Explains technician-related concerns to Front Desk staff and assists with triaging appointment scheduling. Assists with obtaining insurance-required prior authorizations for office procedures and medications. Tracks and processes form requests (e.g., MVA, disability). Maintains general medical knowledge of ocular anatomy and physiology, systemic and ocular diseases, and ocular emergencies. Maintains required (COA) ophthalmic technician certification. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent. One year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician. Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date. CPR certification required. Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma, per the Johns Hopkins equivalency formula.
