Public Policy Research Associate, Data and Democracy Lab
The Data and Democracy Lab in the Brooks School of Public Policy at Cornell University is seeking to hire one or more Research Associates to work on projects related to the modeling of representative democracy. The primary responsibilities of these Research Associates include anchoring multiple research projects focused on electoral systems (such as ranked choice voting) and sampling problems (such as graph partitions for redistricting). They will also be involved in initiating new research areas connected to the lab's work. The lab members publish in peer-reviewed journals across various disciplines. Additional roles may involve: Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. Developing software tools. Engaging with civil rights stakeholders. Collaborating with legal scholars and litigators. The lab (https://mggg.org/) is led by PI Moon Duchin within the Brooks School of Public Policy and the Department of Mathematics at Cornell. It conducts interdisciplinary research drawing from geometry, topology, graphs and networks, probability/statistics, and algorithms, in dialogue with geography, political science, policy, and law. The lab actively participates in civil rights and good-government initiatives. The successful candidate will join a vibrant interdisciplinary community across multiple departments and colleges. Research Associates contribute to designing and implementing research projects under the guidance of a principal investigator or faculty sponsor. They may lead grant-funded research projects on a limited basis. Their duties include planning, conducting, and reporting original research; designing or operating complex research tools; and supervising research operations. They may participate informally in graduate training but are not typically members of graduate committees. They generally do not have formal teaching responsibilities but may attend seminars or contribute to course components as permitted by funding. Required Qualifications:
A PhD in Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, or related STEM fields, or social sciences with a strong quantitative component (e.g., Political Methodology, Geography, Empirical Legal Studies). Ability to acquire new technical and non-technical skills and interpret scholarship outside one's main discipline. Experience working collaboratively under deadlines. Ability to foster inclusive and equitable working relationships with diverse stakeholders. Strong communication skills, both written and interpersonal. Demonstrated commitment to broadening participation in scholarship and government. Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with open-source software development, particularly in Python. Experience in outreach to schools and community organizations. Application Process:
