Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is seeking a Scientist focused on Metal Additive Manufacturing Research and Development for the Advanced Engineering Division. In this position, the candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded project portfolio aligned with SRNL mission enablers of data‑driven materials development and to develop manufacturing solutions for Environmental Management, the NNSA, and energy security. This will include leading and partnering on proposal teams as well as managing both technical and programmatic aspects of successfully won projects.
Responsibilities
Self‑motivated, dynamic researcher who actively promotes a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment in Metal Additive Manufacturing.
Background and working knowledge of additive manufacturing techniques and the fundamental concepts and behavior of metallic materials, with ability to exercise judgment using engineering or scientific principles.
Development and management of an externally funded project portfolio aligned with SRNL mission enablers of data‑driven materials development and manufacturing solutions.
Work safely with particular attention to quality and compliance with all policies and standards.
Research activities may include on‑machine monitoring, machine learning, alloy development, materials synthesis, process modeling, etc.
Use feedstock characterization and analysis, equipment toolpath and parameter development, and characterization of printed metallic parts.
Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment, generating original ideas and conveying them effectively through strong written and oral communication.
Mentor student interns and projects and maintain a national presence at technical meetings, both internal to DOE and through professional organizations.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance; U.S. citizenship is legally required.
Ph.D. in a related field with 5 or more years of relevant experience.
Completed at least one post‑doctoral appointment or 2 years of relevant work experience since completing the Ph.D.
Successful performance as a principal investigator (PI) on interdisciplinary research projects.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred degrees: Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering.
Experience in customer/sponsor relationship management.
Strong interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written, and problem‑solving skills.
Cross‑discipline knowledge in advanced scientific or engineering concepts.
Active DOE Clearance.
