Overview This Advanced Practice Provider role will have primary focus on GI & Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP- NP, PA, Midwife) provides high-quality medical and/or surgical patient care. This position provides care to patients with acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with the Attending Physician.
Responsibilities
Provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and/or preventive healthcare service on a Collaborative APP/Physician team.
Perform histories and physicals; order and interpret tests; make diagnoses; treat injuries/illness; assist with surgical procedures; counsel patient and/or prescribe medications and those invasive procedures defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine.
Work collaboratively with the medical team to deliver organized, timely, cost-effective and quality patient care.
Provide patient care under a defined departmental and state-approved scope of practice with the collaboration of Attending Physicians.
Performance Expectations
Clinical & Patient Care Responsibilities: Demonstrates mastery of treatment and patient care of the specialty population; coordinates care across the continuum; assesses health status; initiates screening and tests; prescribes medication and counsels patients; may assist with procedures; documents in the medical record; communicates with the care team.
Consultation: Serves as a consultant within a multidisciplinary team; educates patients and families; may provide training to residents/fellows; promotes teamwork and collaborative care.
Research: Utilizes current research to develop standards of care; may participate in research, publications, and educational activities.
Ethical Decision Making: Applies clinical judgment and ethical principles; supports interdisciplinary decision-making processes.
Professional Development: Pursues ongoing education and maintains required certifications; participates in teaching and continuing education activities.
Miscellaneous Responsibilities: Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission of VCU Health.
Qualifications
Required Education: Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife or Physician Assistant Program.
Licensure/Certification: Current Virginia licensure from the appropriate Board as a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant; current national certification as appropriate; credentialing per medical staff by-laws; CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS); ACLS and/or PALS as determined by department.
Experience & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications: Previous clinical experience with the population served.
Other Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required: Cultural responsiveness.
Other Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Preferred: 5 years with inflammatory bowel disease management preferred, including managing biologic and immunomodulatory therapies; experience in an academic healthcare system.
