Job Overview
The NICU Milk Technician is responsible for the safe, accurate, and timely preparation of human milk and or formula feedings for patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This position ensures proper handling, fortification, labeling, storage, and delivery of feedings in accordance with physician orders, infection control standards, and hospital policies. The NICU Milk Technician is also responsible to sanitize all equipment associated with milk preparation and delivery, specialty bottles, maternal pumping kits. Qualifications
Required: High school diploma or equivalent required. Successful completion of an Infant Feeding Technician feeding program within 6 months of hire. Strong math skills and ability to perform precise measurements and calculations. Excellent attention to detail and adherence to safety and sanitation standards. Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. Proficient with computers and EMR systems; experience with barcode scanning preferred. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Preferred: Previous experience in healthcare nutrition services, pharmacy tech, or laboratory environment preferred NICU, pediatrics, or sterile preparation environment is a plus. Essential Functions
Prepare, measure, fortify, and package infant feedings - human milk (fresh, frozen, or donor) and/or formula - according to standardized recipes and physician diet orders. Follow strict aseptic technique and safety protocols to ensure quality and prevent contamination. Accurately label feedings with patient identifiers, contents, and expiration date/time, in compliance with barcode scanning and tracking procedures. Thaw, rotate, and store milk according to First In–First Out (FIFO) inventory standards. Maintain detailed logs and documentation in electronic medical record (EMR) and/or milk management systems. Clean and sanitize all preparation surfaces, utensils, and storage equipment per infection prevention guidelines. Clean and sanitize all specialty bottles and maternal pumping kits in accordance with hospital policy. Clean and sanitize NICU Refrigerators and Freezers in accordance with manufacturers instructions for use. Communicate with nurses, dietitians, lactation consultants, and other healthcare staff regarding feeding discrepancies, inventory needs, or special orders. Participate in quality assurance checks, audits, and ongoing education related to milk handling and NICU feeding practices. Assist with inventory management, including ordering and receiving supplies. Assists Clinical Care Technicians and/or Pediatric Care Technicians as needed and performs other technician duties as assigned. Consistently utilizes universal precautions and any other isolation technique to minimize transmission of infection. Benefits
