Overview Job Description: The Athletic Director (AD) provides comprehensive, full-time leadership and administrative oversight for athletic programs at Minnesota West Community and Technical College. This position is responsible for the success of athletic operations, including compliance, personnel management, academic and wellness coordination, housing and basic needs support, athletic transportation, budgeting, facility oversight, and strategic development of new programs like Club-sports. The AD serves as the primary public-facing representative of the Athletics Department and coordinates with the Marketing and Communications Office to ensure branding, promotion, and timely media responses. The role emphasizes inclusive excellence, academic integrity, institutional pride, and student success through an equity-driven, student-centered approach. The initial scope covers intercollegiate programs with potential expansion to a consolidated Director of Athletics portfolio across all intercollegiate operations, subject to organizational changes and demonstrated need.

Responsibilities

Provide direct supervision to assigned employees, including hiring, training, coaching, development, performance management, and disciplinary actions. Maintain assignments in the Faculty Workload Management (FWM) system. Ensure collective bargaining agreements and policies are enforced. Recruit, onboard, coordinate, and evaluate coaches and athletics support personnel. Provide guidance on game strategies, season planning, athlete discipline, and NJCAA compliance. Facilitate professional development opportunities and promote clear performance expectations and ethical conduct.

Strategic Leadership – Athletics Oversight: Provide leadership for athletic programs across all campuses. Develop and evaluate short- and long-term strategic plans aligned with student success, equity, and enrollment growth. Represent the institution at NJCAA Region XIII, MCAC meetings, and related professional consortia. Align athletic programming with college priorities in collaboration with college leadership.

Student-Athlete Academic, Health, and Conduct Support: Coordinate with faculty, advisors, and tutoring services to monitor eligibility and academic progress. Serve as primary liaison to Student Health and athletic trainers for injury reporting and wellness initiatives. Educate athletes on behavioral expectations and manage informal discipline with the Dean of Student Development. Track retention and academic performance and implement improvement strategies.

Housing and Basic Needs Support: Partner with the Basic Needs Resource Hub to connect athletes with food, housing, transportation, and healthcare resources. Work with housing authorities and partners to help secure safe, affordable housing. Monitor at-risk athletes and coordinate emergency housing and case management during breaks and transitional enrollment periods.

Transportation and Event Coordination: Manage travel logistics, fleet scheduling, and travel compliance. Coordinate with Transportation Services on game day needs and safety reviews. Plan and staff home events, including officials, facilities setup, crowd management, and compliance. Develop a system to manage travel requests in line with policy and budget.

Budget Management, Facilities, and Equipment Oversight: Develop and administer athletic budgets with the Business Office. Track expenditures and fund stewardship. Manage inventory, maintenance, and rotation of uniforms, equipment, and supplies. Coordinate facility scheduling and maintenance with Physical Plant and Operations.

Media, Communications & External Relations: Serve as spokesperson for the Athletic Department and work with Marketing and Communications on press, branding, and social media. Produce internal content (recaps, highlights, spotlights) and ensure consistent branding. Support alumni and donor engagement through storytelling and events.

Club Sports Program Development: Lead the design, launch, and growth of a Club-sports program. Benchmark models, establish recruitment pipelines, define coaching roles, and manage space, equipment, and software needs for a Club-sports lab. Position Club-sports as a strategy for enrollment and retention.

Compliance and Student Engagement: Develop inclusive recruitment strategies for diverse student-athletes. Promote a culture of respect, anti-discrimination, and inclusive excellence. Support equity trainings and collaboration with campus groups and community partners. Use athletics to enhance school pride, student engagement, and community connection across campuses.

Other duties: Perform additional duties to support department operations, student services, orientation, and campus needs as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications: Three years of professional experience in athletics administration, coaching, student services, or a related field. A Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Athletic Administration, Education, or a closely related field can substitute for one year of experience. Knowledge of NJCAA or similar collegiate athletics regulatory frameworks. Demonstrated experience supervising staff, managing budgets, and coordinating compliance. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to travel, work evenings/weekends, and manage multi-campus operations.

Preferred qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited institution. Experience in leadership and supervision appropriate to the assignment. Experience working with intercollegiate athletics and knowledge of NJCAA/MCAC guidelines.
