Under the supervision of Dining Management, the Principal Food Service Worker will work independently in the daily oversight of a Dining Hall Restaurant, Retail location, and/or Catering operations. The incumbent serves as "Lead" for a team and performs a variety of duties related to semi-skilled food preparation, serving or maintenance functions in the kitchen or dining area plus cash handling, customer service, event/food preparation and delivery and overseeing safety and sanitation of the location. The Principal Food Service Worker is expected to have substantial knowledge of the complex operation of the dining or kitchen area and to have previous experience or training in their particular area of work. Budgeted Salary:
$25.10/hourly Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. 45% - Daily Operations Depending on location, The Principal Food Service Worker may open, close and operate a Dining, Retail or Catering location; serves as a work leader and may train and lead an assigned team in performing unskilled and semi-skilled tasks; prepares fruits, vegetables and other items; sets up food service lines; serves customers; handles cash; maintains cleanliness and sanitation of the area; operates dishwashing equipment; cleans and mops floors. Assists in the barista/host/cashier area. Leads kitchen/pantry work including preparation, replenishing, cleaning, and basic food preparation tasks; leads in meal setup and dessert setups; demonstrates food presentation and merchandising techniques following menus, production sheets and recipes. May make sandwiches to order or in advance; ensures proper food presentation and service. Receiving Performs general receiving duties; inspects, stores and inventories items following HACCP guidelines; uses FIFO; assists with ordering; maintains storage areas; handles deliveries and reviews invoices. Maintains professional relationships with staff and vendors to render assistance during shortages. 15% - Safety and Sanitation Ensures safe food temperatures; maintains hygiene and safety standards; follows HACCP guidelines and records temperatures daily; operates and maintains equipment safely. Dining Room Leads dining room setup, restocks, labeling leftover food, maintaining cleanliness of work areas. Dish Washer Leads dishwashing team, ensures proper cleaning and sanitation, operates dishwashing equipment, and restocks dining areas. 15% - General Maintenance Leads maintenance tasks across the operation, cleans and maintains equipment and work areas, ensures safety and sanitation, and supports facilities maintenance as needed. 10% - Customer Service Delivers exemplary customer service; acts as primary contact with guests; maintains knowledge of policies, menus, and handles cash and customer questions; may oversee front of house setups and lead staff to meet service standards. 10% - Leadership Maintains professional demeanor, assists with training, and assigns duties; supports scheduling to meet service hours. 5% - Other Duties as Assigned Will complete Dining Cash Handling Certification; may drive campus vehicles for events and related duties. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in food preparation and general maintenance in a kitchen or dining area or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of food service, custodial or store-keeping practices applicable to the role. Strong communication skills to direct staff and interact with customers. Experience in safe operation of kitchen equipment, dishwashing machines, and other relevant equipment. Knowledge of safe temperatures for serving, handling and storing food. Knowledge of cleaning and safety techniques for food preparation, storage and service. Knowledge of merchandising and presentation techniques in food service. Ability to read, write and perform basic math; follow instructions; work independently and in a team; work with diverse groups. Ability to work effectively with others. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual in Spanish/English, or willingness to learn. SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
