About the IU Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology (IUMAA) The IU Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (IUMAA) is Indiana University's newest museum. It combines elements of the former museum and the Laboratory of Archaeology into a cohesive experience focused on purposeful storytelling, stewarding collections, and engaging communities. IUMAA houses over 5 million artifacts spanning a broad range of human experience and is accessible for research, teaching, and community partnerships with Indigenous communities and advisory boards.

Role Overview The Learning and Community Engagement Manager oversees all aspects of the Learning and Community Engagement department, including managing forward-facing team members, curriculum development, workshops, tours, outreach, relationship building, and project management. The Manager is committed to creating transformative learning environments that bridge informal learning spaces with classroom and cultural spaces and to building a department grounded in community‑driven practices.

Department‑Specific Responsibilities

Manages all forward‑facing team members.

Provides strategic leadership and planning that establishes transformative education offerings and community engagement programs, supporting sustainable revenue building.

Manages the development of curricula (digital/physical), auditing, evaluating, and revising current curricula, and developing new curricula aligned with museum ethos, mission, values, and IU 2030 strategic plan.

Develops an IUMAA tour program including pricing structure, scheduling methods for K‑12 and IU students, adult group tours, staffing, data tracking, evaluation rubric, and on‑site check‑in process.

Refines community engagement programs and outreach, developing evaluation metrics and methods for offerings (tours, workshops, outreach tables, visitor services, programs, etc.).

Works with IU faculty to increase capacity to engage and integrate exhibitions, research collections, and community presence within course curricula.

Builds relationships and facilitates outreach visits to schools, assisted living facilities, or other venues.

Collaborates with the curatorial, exhibitions, and design team to develop dynamic and engaging exhibit interactives and interpretation.

Develops a Museum Young Professional program focused on building professional understanding and capacity of internships, fellows, practicum students, and part‑time student staff.

Updates and maintains detailed and accessible records on past and current education initiatives, including outreach, grant deliverables, data tracking, evaluation, and impact measurables.

Collaborates with Operations, Curatorial Affairs, and Development to develop practices and policies that maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment for visitors, faculty, and staff.

Participates in grant writing, implementation, and reporting processes as requested.

Manages educational teaching collections, departmental supplies, and outreach promotional IUMAA give‑away material.

Serves on internal and external committees and working groups as assigned.

Performs other projects and responsibilities as assigned.

General Responsibilities

Creates, implements, and evaluates experiences that connect audiences with the university, including local and rural outreach, campus, summer camps, home school events, teacher professional development workshops, and family programming.

Supports activities of other university departments with expertise on the desired audience, maintaining affiliations with colleagues locally and nationally.

Develops and conducts training for a pool of educators who can facilitate programs.

Manages daily operation of programs in accordance with university strategic plans, developing and managing experience budgets, and overseeing online content and technology.

Seeks sources of funding and works with development staff to develop proposals and annual reports.

Provides process improvement suggestions to supervisor.

Education

Required: Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in education, museum studies, anthropology, and/or other humanities or related fields.

Work Experience

Required: 2 years in education, fine arts, or other related field.

Preferred: 5 years experience in education, cultural heritage, non‑profit, museum, or related sector; 4 years experience mentoring students and/or adults; 5 years experience managing and mentoring staff; 3 years experience in facilitation and cultivating dialogue around race, class, and culture; 3 years experience managing budgets, grant proposals, and departmental strategic goals.

Experience working directly with Black, Indigenous, and communities of color, navigating colonial histories and building sustainable, transparent, trusting relationships.

Physical/Location Information Bloomington, Indiana – In‑person position. The role involves sedentary work as well as standing for long periods, moving around an office environment and campus. The candidate must be able to ascend/descend ladders, occasionally move items weighing 30–50 pounds, and perform essential functions with or without accommodation.

Compensation Up to $60,000 based on education and work experience.
