THE CITY OF EL CAJON IS LOOKING FOR ENTRY-LEVEL PARAMEDIC FIREFIGHTERS.
Pay rates are calculated based on full time, non-probationary experience as a Paramedic Firefighter. Educational Incentive Pay is available to employees who possess a college degree in a job-related field upon date of hire: Associate's Degree: 2.5% salary increase Bachelor's Degree: 5% salary increase The Recruitment Process
Interested applicants must submit and complete the online application and supplemental questionnaire by the application deadline. Candidates who meet the qualification guidelines will be invited to participate in the examination process outlined below. Successful candidates will be placed on the City of El Cajon eligibility list for employment consideration for at least six months. Examination Process will include: 11/13/2025 - Physical Abilities Test (PAT). Requirements to waive PAT: Possession of CPAT certificate within last 6 months, or enrollment in a Firefighter I academy currently or within the last 6 months. 11/18/2025 and/or 11/19/2025 - Appraisal Interview and Paramedic Skills Assessment Scenario. HFR was formed via a Joint Powers Agreement (JPA) to share the cost of a single management team among the three member cities. This cooperative fire service agreement provides cost containment opportunities, while maintaining local control within the Cities' jurisdictions. Paramedic/Firefighter Education:
Educational achievement equivalent to graduation from high school. Experience:
None required. Special Requirements:
Possession of or ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid Class C California driver’s license with a safe driving record. Must obtain a minimum of a Class C California driver’s license with a Firefighter Endorsement prior to completion of two years. Possession of State of California Paramedic License with San Diego County accreditation and basic CPR certificate (Must be maintained as a condition of employment). The 2025-2026 County of San Diego EMS protocols will be used during the Appraisal Interview and Paramedic Skills Assessment. For reference, the County of San Diego protocols are available at the Emergency Medical Services Treatment Protocols/Policies website. Candidates must be successful in every component of the examination process to be placed on the City of El Cajon's eligibility list for employment consideration. Candidates who move forward in the pre-employment process may undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph examination, psychological exam and a pre-employment medical evaluation.
