Alcohol and Drug Counselor . Alcohol and Drug Counselors provide screening, counseling, referrals, and outreach services to individuals experiencing substance use disorders. Duties include short-term crisis intervention; planning and implementing supportive and educational counseling; assisting adolescents, adults, and families in recognizing and addressing social and cultural patterns, family problems, and personal dysfunctional behaviors that contribute to alcoholism and drug abuse; making presentations to schools and community groups; and monitoring compliance with grants and contracts.

The Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) is responsible for providing mental health and substance use disorder services to county residents. DBH provides prevention and treatment services to all age groups, with emphasis on children and youth, adults with serious mental illness, and individuals with substance use disorders. DBH offers outreach, prevention, and early intervention services. The Department operates with eight direct service areas and five indirect service areas, a workforce of over 1,000 positions, and a roughly $700 million annual budget.

Responsibilities

Screen, counsel, refer, and conduct outreach for individuals with substance use disorders.

Provide short-term crisis intervention and plan and implement supportive and educational counseling.

Assist adolescents, adults, and families in recognizing and addressing social and cultural patterns, family problems, and personal dysfunctional behaviors related to alcoholism and drug abuse.

Make presentations to schools and community groups.

Monitor compliance with grants and contracts.

Qualifications

Certification as an Alcohol or Other Drug (AOD) counselor by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

One (1) year of full-time equivalent experience in a Substance Use Disorder Treatment Program performing counseling, crisis intervention, and community resource referrals.

Fluency in American Sign Language, Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, or Vietnamese is strongly encouraged; bilingual positions offer additional compensation. Applicants must pass written and oral language competency tests for bilingual vacancies.

Travel, Hours, and Positions

Travel:

Travel throughout the county is required; maintain a valid California driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance.

Hours:

Some evening and weekend work may be required.

RBEST/TEST Positions:

Field-based roles that require working outside the office, including sites with law enforcement, Probation, and ER hospital partnerships. Indicate availability on the supplemental questionnaire.
