About the Position

The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill multiple permanent, full-time entry-level positions of Deputy Sheriff Private. Prior experience is not required, however, candidates that are current students or recent graduates of an approved Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) accredited institution in the State of Maryland are also encouraged to apply. Applicants applying under this announcement will be considered for the Fall 2025 Academy Class. Candidates with at least one year of prior law enforcement experience in the State of Maryland and current MPCTC certification should apply under the Experienced Deputy Sheriff announcement located at government jobs portal.

About the Agency

The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff has been a vital link in the criminal justice system for more than 300 years, providing the citizens of Prince George’s County with professional, transparent, and effective law enforcement service. The Office of the Sheriff serves as the law enforcement arm of the courts, responding to domestic violence calls, processing warrants, civil papers, domestic violence peace and protective orders, Emergency Psychiatric Petition (EPS) orders, and the execution of evictions. The Office of the Sheriff is also responsible for court security, providing security and protection for visitors to our courthouses and securing courtrooms and holding areas. Deputies transport prisoners and are responsible for extraditing fugitives from other states.

Responsibilities

Provide effective and efficient law enforcement services to the residents of Prince George's County Perform general law enforcement and investigations, including serving warrants and/or extraditing persons wanted on criminal warrants Transport prisoners to and from various institutions and courts throughout Maryland and the United States Arrest, detain, and process prisoners in the custody of the Office of the Sheriff Serve civil processes/summonses Execute writs/court orders Maintain security in the courtrooms of the Circuit and District Courts Monitor prisoners in holding areas Perform court-related house evictions Complete reports

Minimum Qualifications

U.S. Citizen High School diploma/ GED or equivalent At least 20 years and 6 months of age at time of application (21+ at time of graduation from Police Academy) Possess a valid driver’s license and at least 6 months of post-license driving experience Pass all qualification factors listed in the Additional Information Applicants must pass a written test, an agility test, an oral examination, and be able to work shift work Successfully pass a background investigation

This position is designated “essential” and the incumbent must be willing to participate as a critical/essential employee during emergencies, disasters, or special events. Essential employees are expected to report to work or remain at work when other County employees are granted administrative leave. Employees may be assigned to any of the three shifts to ensure 24-hour coverage to maintain the facility’s security.

60+ college credit hours Current student of an MPCTC-accredited institution or, if a recent graduate, must possess MPCTC certification from an approved institution
