Overview

Teacher Special Education, Secondary (25-26) at Baltimore City Public Schools. Plans, develops, implements, and monitors individualized education programs (IEPs), provides appropriate specialized instructional instruction, and works closely with general educators to ensure continuity of services for meeting the specific needs of students with disabilities. Manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required. The applicant pool is viewable for employment in grades 6 - adult. Responsibilities

Provides direct instructional services to students with disabilities based on their IEPs. Assesses individual students with disabilities for the purpose of preparing and implementing IEPs. Develops, adapts, modifies, and individualizes educational materials, resources, techniques, methods, and strategies to meet the needs of students with disabilities within the City Schools curricular framework. Maintains appropriate records and documents prescriptive progress of special education students in both the special and regular education programs based on instructional objectives. Assumes responsibility for the development of appropriate behavior of students by establishing and maintaining effective discipline and management procedures. Evaluates the academic and social progress of special education students on a continuous basis. Serves as a member of the school IEP Team as appropriate. Works with parents of special education students to ensure ongoing communication and instructional support. Coordinates instructional activities and collaborates with other professional staff to maximize learning opportunities. Assigns work to and oversees aides and parent and student volunteers, if applicable. Ensures the classroom and instructional environment are safe, healthy, and conducive to learning, with materials accessible to students. Participates in school-wide activities and approved fundraising activities as appropriate. Monitors student behavior in non-instructional areas and intervenes to modify disruptive behavior, reporting to the administrator as needed. Demonstrates competence in the subject areas pertinent to the instruction of students with disabilities. Utilizes traditional and innovative instructional methodologies for diverse sub-groups within the population of students with disabilities. Serves as a model for special education students in written and oral English. Communicates effectively about the special education program and analyzes its progress. Participates in in-service training, staff development activities, and staff meetings as required. Performs and promotes activities in compliance with equal employment and non-discrimination policies; follows federal and state laws, school board policies, and professional standards. Salary

Maximum salary: 118411.00 Minimum salary: 60662.00 Qualifications

Required

Valid educator license in special education (secondary, grades 6-adult) or eligible for a conditional license (Bachelor's degree including 6 credits in math, 6 credits in science, 6 credits in English and 6 credits in history with a C or better and a GPA 2.5 or better). Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Knowledge of federal laws protecting educational services for students with disabilities. Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of the instructional specialty. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills. Ability to plan, manage, and evaluate instructional procedures addressing student needs and the instructional environment. Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents. Ability to move about the room to check student work and monitor behavior. Preferred
