Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program. Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports). The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions. Has completed Concussion Certification and the National Federation of High School Sports Coaching Accreditations with compliance to IHSAA coaching certification regulations. Reports To

The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals. Supervises

In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal. Job Goal

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The coach must also instruct and demonstrate behaviors leading to character development, self-discipline, self-confidence and pride of accomplishment in student athletes. To upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation. General

The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire system. Public exposure is a responsibility; however, good sportsmanship and mental health objectives must not be overridden. The position includes other aspects such as extended time, risk of injury and due process predicaments. The job description aims to guide the function; in cases not specifically covered, a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment. Duties and Responsibilities

Thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation's School Board of Education and responsibility for their implementation by the entire staff of the sports program. Knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implement and interpret them for staff. Understand the proper administrative line of command and refer requests or grievances through proper channels; attend public/staff/departmental meetings as required. Knowledge of system, state (IHSAA) and league (Conference) regulations. Staff Responsibilities

Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff. Design conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program. Train and inform staff; encourage professional growth by attending clinics. Delegate duties, supervise implementation and evaluate staff effectiveness at season's end. Maintain discipline, address grievances and work to increase morale and cooperation. Perform other duties as assigned by the athletic director/principal. Administrative Duties

Assist the athletic director in scheduling, transportation and requirements for tournament and special sport events. Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to scheduled facility times; coordinate with maintenance and school employees. Provide documentation for state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility. Ensure safeguards for maintenance and protection of equipment sites. Advise the athletic director and recommend policy or procedural changes. Varsity coaches must maintain and report scores and team statistics to local media and provide statistics to the athletic director at the end of the season. Student Responsibilities

Serve as a mentor to each athlete to promote character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Monitor athletes’ grades and conduct; provide guidance during practices, games and travel. Provide training rules and sport-specific regulations to each athlete who participates. Initiate programs concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies; communicate with athletic trainers regarding injuries to ensure proper procedures. Direct student managers, assistants and statisticians. Determine discipline and due process procedures when enforcement is necessary; coordinate with parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. Assist athletes in college or advanced educational selection. Finance and Equipment

Participate in budgeting with the athletic director by establishing season requirements; recommend equipment guidelines. Operate within budget; be responsible for all equipment and collect costs for lost or unretruned equipment. Arrange issuing, storing and reconditioning of equipment; submit annual inventory and current records. Mark and identify equipment; monitor equipment rooms and coach offices; limit access to authorized personnel. Ensure locker rooms and facilities are clean; maintain equipment care and use; secure building when custodians are not on duty. Instill respect for equipment and school property. Public Relations

Organize preseason meetings for parents, coaches, players and guests. Promote the sport within and outside the school; maintain good relations with media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers and fans. Provide timely information to local media concerning schedules, tournaments and results. Terms of Employment

Less than 12 months; Stipend based on experience.
