Job Summary Staff Research Associate 1 (SRA 1)
will be an integral member of the research team in the
Department of Pediatrics , supporting large animal model research studies led by Dr. Satyan Lakshminrusimha at the Surgical Research Facility (SRF) on the Davis campus, with main lab and office space located at Research II on the Sacramento campus.
This lab focuses on preclinical models of birth asphyxia and novel neonatal resuscitation techniques, including complex fetal surgeries and extended ventilator follow-up studies. The SRA will assist in the preparation, execution, and analysis of these in vivo experiments and contribute to the overall operation and organization of the laboratory.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare for and assist in in‑vivo fetal and neonatal lamb experiments, including surgical setup, equipment sterilization, and coordination with surgical staff.
Support anesthetic induction and general anesthesia monitoring during surgeries.
Collect and analyze serial blood gases and biological samples, ensuring accuracy and data integrity.
Assist with tissue harvesting and processing post‑mortem.
Perform data acquisition and analysis, including Biopac software extraction and interpretation.
Maintain and repair laboratory and PI‑owned equipment.
Manage inventory, supplies, and general lab organization across both Davis and Sacramento campuses.
Assist in the development of new experimental protocols and ensure compliance with research and animal care standards.
Act as a liaison between the Principal Investigators and the SRF animal surgical staff.
Contribute to lab meetings, manuscript preparation, conference presentations, and collaborative research efforts.
This position is supported by NIH funding and offers the opportunity to gain extensive experience in translational research using large animal models.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience working in a laboratory setting and with lab organization.
Experience with post‑mortem tissue sectioning or tissue harvest, and cryogenic freezing.
Experience in animal‑related research involving in vivo experiments.
Experience with restraint, percutaneous IV catheter placement, anesthetic induction, intubation, monitoring, and euthanasia procedures in sheep.
Basic knowledge of fetal blood circulation and lung disease.
Knowledgeable in basic lung, brain, and heart anatomy, and must be able to identify, harvest, and section these organ on sheep.
Familiar with blood gas analysis and use of Radiometer brand analyzers, as well as blood processing (centrifugation, aliquoting).
Must be an effective communicator and a team player.
Preferred Qualifications
B.S. degree in Biological Sciences, Animal Science, Molecular Biology, or other scientific field.
Customer service experience.
Experience assisting in fetal lamb resuscitation.
