Overview
Under general supervision, performs general law enforcement work to protect the lives, safety, health, welfare and property of the residents and visitors of the City of Sheridan by enforcing municipal, state and federal ordinances, statutes and laws. Exercises independent judgment in dealing with dangerous or unusual situations and often works under stressful, high‑risk conditions. Position Type
Unpaid position. Responsibilities
Patrol assigned areas to deter illegal activity and identify criminal activity. Respond to dispatch calls and investigate citizen complaints and reports of breaches of the peace including crimes in progress, crimes discovered after the fact, disturbances, and accidents. Perform investigations of crimes by interviewing witnesses, collecting physical evidence and photographing crime scenes. Prepare and transmit reports including incident reports, non‑criminal reports, booking reports, accident reports, witness statements and traffic citations. Apprehend, arrest and detain criminal suspects and law violators, taking suspects into custody by reading the rights and transporting to holding facilities. Prepares citations and summonses necessary to charge individuals with violations of ordinances, statutes, and laws including petty, misdemeanor and felonious offenses. Serve warrants and subpoenas. Act as first responder to emergencies rendering medical/first aid/CPR and requesting medical attention when necessary. Perform traffic surveillance and enforce traffic ordinances and statutes, investigate traffic accidents and assist motorists. Serve as a witness by testifying in court and providing information and evidence during court proceedings. Respond to inquiries and provide information to citizens and visitors of the City of Sheridan. Attend periodic training sessions and seminars involving physical training, classroom instruction, field exercises, simulation exercises, investigative methods, rescue methods and instruction in the use of equipment including firearms, vehicles, intoxilyzers, tazers and other equipment. Participate in community‑oriented police functions to educate and promote community relations. Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent required. Law enforcement experience preferred, but not required. Minimum of 21 years of age and U.S. Citizen. Colorado certified or POST certifiable Police Officer by date of hire. CPR/First Aid Certification. Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) certification or state equivalent. Currently employed full time as a police officer by a state, county, or municipal police or sheriff’s department. Reserve Officer Qualifications
STATE CERTIFIED LAW ENFORCEMENT RESERVE OFFICER: Lateral‑Entry officer must meet current hiring standards. Minimum of two (2) years patrol duty while employed full time by state, county, municipal police or sheriff’s department. Academy training does not count. Application Process
