General Summary The Flat Rate Technician (Tech) supports VIP’s mission to EARN AUTOMOTIVE CUSTOMERS FOR LIFE by applying VIP culture and processes to deliver a different and better customer experience. The Tech diagnoses automotive systems, repairs and replaces parts, fluids, tires, and accessories, and ensures services are completed correctly the first time. The Tech follows company safety, loss prevention, and customer service programs, along with established policies and applicable municipal, state, and federal regulations.
Duties & Responsibilities
Prioritize workplace safety; follow safety policies, complete safety training, lock out unsafe equipment, and report unsafe conditions to Management.
Provide automotive systems diagnosis, repair, and maintenance services for customers, covering ASE-series certifications: A2 Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, A3 Manual Drive Train & Axles, A5 Brakes, A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, A7 Heating & Air Conditioning, A8 Engine Performance.
Initiate a valid Service Work Order before starting service and display it with the vehicle during service.
Complete MPI prior to service and support the 5-for-5 Customer Engagement Process.
Return Service Work Orders and required printouts to the Service Desk with vehicle keys at service completion.
Obtain needed parts from Desk Team members and return unused parts after service.
Return cores, batteries, and used tires to designated areas for proper handling.
Maintain a minimum 16-week average productivity based on position.
Follow VIP quality service policies and ensure work meets VIP quality standards.
Complete required training and certifications for the position (see details below).
Quality, Safety & Housekeeping responsibilities: road test vehicles as needed, secure vehicles, use protective covers, maintain a clean workspace, participate in shop maintenance, and comply with safety and loss prevention programs.
Additional responsibilities: maintain technical capabilities, review attendance and time records, participate in team meetings, support safe operation standards, and comply with hazardous waste disposal regulations.
Facility and Equipment Maintenance: maintain facility and equipment appearance and condition, ensure clean service area, and log issues in the facility/equipment database.
Procedural Compliance: enforce the service Code of Ethics and regulatory requirements.
Performance Measurement
Maintain minimum 50% productivity (Billed Hours / Worked Hours).
Minimize comebacks by ensuring work is completed properly the first time.
Standard Work Week
Schedule: 5 days per week, 40 hours.
Attendance: be ready to perform duties at shift start time and work all scheduled hours.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Read, analyze, and interpret technical instructions, journals, procedures, or governmental regulations.
Explain vehicle information to customers and respond to questions from coworkers.
Diagnose and recommend solutions to basic automotive problems.
Interpret and apply written or scheduled instructions.
Ability to perform required automotive services listed in the role.
Education and Experience
One year of related experience in automotive service field.
Completion of a two-year college or technical school program is recommended.
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates, Licenses, and/or Registrations
Current, valid driver’s license issued in the state of residence.
Ase Certification G1 – Maintenance and light repair recommended.
Ase Certification A4 – Suspension & Steering.
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those associates encounter while performing the essential functions of the Installation Technician job.
