Marchay, a leading luxury travel firm based in New York, is seeking a
Staff Accountant
to own our core accounting functions with a strong focus on commissions. This is a hands-on, detail-driven role that's critical to keeping our financial operations accurate and organized. We're looking for someone who can execute the fundamentals flawlessly today, with the potential to grow into a more strategic contributor over time.
In the short term, you'll be responsible for maintaining clean, reconciled books in QuickBooks, managing commission payments and receivables, and ensuring we always have a clear picture of our P&L. Long term, the right hire could expand into budgeting, cash flow forecasting, KPI dashboard development, and full end-to-end P&L ownership — potentially evolving into a Controller-level role.
Key Responsibilities (Immediate Focus)
Match commissions to payments and perform bank reconciliations Create internal reports on outstanding commissions (accounts receivable tracking) Chase down unpaid commissions from vendors (AR collections) Maintain and update the P&L in QuickBooks, ensuring accurate transaction categorization Assist with month-end close (basic accruals, reconciliations) Maintain organized records and documentation for audit-readiness Build SOPs, create and refine processes, and help manage accounting-related email workflows
What This Role Could Grow Into
Own end-to-end P&L reporting and analysis Develop and maintain cash flow forecasts (e.g., 13-week rolling) Support budgeting and track actuals vs. budget Build internal KPI dashboards for leadership Handle expense analysis and cost optimization reporting Liaise with external accountants and audit firms during year-end processes Own vendor and contractor payment processes (AP) Oversee internal controls and implement process improvements Support financial scenario modeling and decision-making Potentially grow into a Controller-level position or partner closely with FP&A
Requirements
Bachelor's degree (or higher) is required 1-3 years of accounting experience, ideally with QuickBooks Online Strong understanding of the three main financial statements (Income Statement, Statement of Cash Flows, Balance Sheet) Familiarity with payment processing systems and banking interfaces Ability to work independently in a remote setting Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail Experience with commissions, accounts receivable, or KPI reporting is a plus Interest in process improvement and building efficient workflows
