Security and Low Voltage Systems Technician
The Safety & Security Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and boots on the ground support for the development, implementation, and management of the District 117 Safety & Emergency Operations Plan. This position is critical for ensuring a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment for all students and staff. The Coordinator will oversee all aspects of school safety, including emergency preparedness, risk assessment, security protocols, training, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. Possession of a valid Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board (ILETSB) certification (active or retired). Retired in good standing from a law enforcement agency with a minimum of ten (10) years of honorable service. Demonstrated and progressive experience in developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety and security plans and procedures within a law enforcement or similar environment. Extensive knowledge of modern law enforcement practices, emergency response protocols, incident command systems, and relevant state and federal legal frameworks pertaining to safety and security. Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and public presentation skills, with a proven ability to effectively and respectfully interact with a diverse range of stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members. Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision, exercise sound judgment, and make critical decisions in high-pressure situations. Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities effectively. Essential Functions Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety and security plans, emergency operations plans, and related policies for the school district, ensuring alignment with best practices and legal requirements. Develop and implement school behavioral threat assessment policies, procedures, training, and assessment teams to proactively identify and address potential safety concerns. Conduct regular and thorough risk assessments and safety audits of all school facilities and grounds to identify potential hazards and vulnerabilities, and develop mitigation strategies. Provide comprehensive training to all faculty and staff on safety and security procedures, including emergency response protocols for various scenarios such as lockdowns, evacuations, medical emergencies, and active threats. Manage and oversee the maintenance of all safety and security equipment, including our crisis management app, security cameras, alarm systems, access control systems, emergency communication tools, and other related technology. Maintain the inventory of access swipe cards and conduct regular tests of doors and perimeter access. Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with local law enforcement agencies, fire departments, emergency medical services, and other relevant community partners to develop, review, and regularly practice integrated emergency response plans and protocols. Serve as the primary point of contact for all safety-related concerns, incidents, and emergencies within the school district, ensuring timely and appropriate responses and communication. Continuously monitor and analyze safety trends, incident reports, and relevant data to identify areas for potential improvement in safety protocols and to make data-driven recommendations to the Superintendent and other district leadership. Provide oversight and guidance to school security personnel assigned to schools within the district, ensuring their roles and responsibilities are clearly defined and aligned with best practices and district policies Maintain daily communication with our School Resource Officers (SROs) to ensure an open flow of communication regarding concerns and opportunities to improve student safety. Ensure the school district's full compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and mandates pertaining to school safety, security, and emergency management. Monitor anonymous reporting systems and relevant social media channels (in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines) for potential threats or safety concerns, and implement appropriate follow-up procedures. Other Functions Attend relevant professional development and safety conferences as approved. Participate in district-level committees related to crisis response and school safety. Support school administrators in conducting safety drills and post-incident debriefs. Assist in reviewing safety-related policies, student handbooks, and staff manuals. Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent related to the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors. Skills Required Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion. Proficient in Microsoft Office and crisis management tools, with the ability to learn new systems as needed. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster trust and credibility with staff, students, families, and community partners. Capacity to analyze and interpret data to inform safety planning and decision-making. Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond quickly and effectively during emergencies. Physical Requirements The Safety & Security Coordinator must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, including traversing large school campuses and facility grounds. The position requires the ability to quickly navigate stairs and varied terrain during emergency situations or drills. The coordinator must be able to observe, hear, and respond to safety concerns in a timely manner across both indoor and outdoor settings. Occasional lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to 30 pounds may be necessary. Manual dexterity is required to operate safety-related technology, emergency equipment, and standard office tools. Work Environment This position operates in both indoor and outdoor environments, including standard office settings, school buildings, and exterior school grounds. The Safety & Security Coordinator will frequently be exposed to varying weather conditions while performing routine facility inspections or responding to safety concerns. The role may involve working under pressure and responding to emergency situations, which can be physically and emotionally demanding. Regular interaction with students, staff, public safety personnel, and community members is expected. The position may require occasional irregular hours or on-call availability to address after-hours emergencies or district-wide safety issues.
