Overview
MERCHANT SERVICES UNDERWRITER – Hankey Group / NowPay LLC (Founded 2021). This is a full-time, on-site role based in Los Angeles, CA or Agoura Hills, CA. NowPay LLC is part of the Hankey Group family of companies, which includes Westlake Financial, Nowcom, and others. NowPay is a full-service registered ISO/MSP offering card and ACH processing, POS hardware/software, and various payment technology solutions. Responsibilities
Review merchant processing applications and supporting documentation for ACH and card processing services. Assess risk during onboarding by evaluating industry type, transaction volume, average ticket, delivery timeframe, card present/not present status, and other factors; make informed decisions and recommendations. Run underwriting checks with third-party vendors for new merchant applications. Perform financial risk analysis, evaluate business financial positions, liabilities, payout delays, and reserve estimates for prospective and existing merchant accounts. Set processing parameters for merchant accounts. Monitor transaction volumes, batches, and authorizations to identify potential high risk or fraudulent activity. Investigate processing volume issues, chargebacks, returns, refunds, and fraud on accounts exceeding risk parameters; adjust exposures and reserves as needed in real time. Review financial records (invoices, balance sheets, bank statements, processing statements) to identify risks and trends. Create and maintain risk-related policies and procedures. Communicate with merchants to verify activity and collect documentation as necessary. Review incoming chargebacks and assist merchants with rebuttals. Coordinate with third parties such as acquirers and sponsor banks. Maintain and review current risk information on existing accounts; ensure internal processes stay up to date. Stay informed on industry trends related to merchant services underwriting, fraud, and risk. Willingness to support additional tasks as needed.
Experience and Qualifications
BS/BA degree (Finance, Business, Economics) or related work experience. Minimum 2 years of experience in risk, credit, or underwriting for a payment processor, processing bank, or merchant services provider. Strong knowledge of card brand and NACHA rules. Experience reviewing merchant applications and files for payment processing readiness. Experience in merchant underwriting and risk with a merchant processor, payment facilitator, SaaS provider, or fintech company. Ability to interpret credit bureau reports and bank/financial statements. Familiarity with payment industry merchant guidelines and high-risk business types. Experience determining and communicating status after review (approve, pending, or decline) based on financial, compliance, and/or fraud risks. Knowledge of risk management best practices related to fraud, KYC/AML, and card/ACH processing tools and procedures. Experience working with sponsor banks and auditors. Ability to navigate a startup environment. Role requires work at Los Angeles or Agoura Hills offices.
Compensation
Competitive starting salary: $80,000 – $90,000 per year; exact offer based on location, experience, education, credentials, and licensure where applicable.
