Michigan Technological University is seeking a

Financial Aid Counselor . The ideal candidate should be a student-oriented, self-starting, critical thinker with keen attention to detail. This role involves serving as a member of the Student Financial Services Center team, monitoring and interpreting best practices and legislative updates from various agencies, and advising the director to ensure policy compliance. A genuine interest in promoting student success is essential. Responsibilities and Essential Duties

Monitor student satisfactory academic progress (SAP) and ensure eligibility for Title IV aid. Administer and certify over $11 million in State of Michigan programs, including various scholarships and grants. Serve on the Scholastic Standards and Appeals Committee, demonstrating compassion and discretion. Counsel students regarding SAP status and advise on maintaining or regaining good standing. Interpret legislative updates and advise leadership to maintain compliance. Review and update required student disclosures and financial aid sections annually. Oversee operations and updates of the Student Financial Services Center website. Assist with scholarship competitions, financial literacy presentations, and other events. Perform need analysis functions based on submitted financial information. Meet with students and families, providing excellent customer service. Ensure the security of confidential student data. Provide empathetic and courteous service in all interactions. Engage in continuous improvement strategies. Supervisory Responsibilities:

May supervise student assistants. Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience Experience:

At least 3 years in financial aid or related field; project management skills; proficiency in MS Office; experience with Banner and higher education settings is desirable. Skills:

Excellent communication, ability to explain complex information, independence, organization, attention to detail, confidentiality, teamwork, adaptability to new technology. Work Environment & Physical Demands

Occasional evening/weekend work; ability to lift up to 25 pounds; typical office environment. Additional Conditions

Mandatory training, background check, and eligibility to work in the U.S. are required. Salary starts at $48,000, commensurate with experience. The position is exempt, full-time, and funded for 12 months. Other
