JOB SUMMARY This position assists in the operations of the circulation desk.
MAJOR DUTIES
Greets and assists patrons; checks materials in and out; issues library cards; generates patron holds and other requests; handles overdue and lost notices; updates patrons on new materials, new library programs, and library services.
Assists patrons in locating library materials.
Responds to patron reference questions by telephone, email, and in person.
Assists patrons in the use of library computers, including internet navigation, the use of software programs, and the use of the library’s digital resources.
Performs library opening and closing procedures; sorts and distributes mail; processes daily courier shipments.
Assists in maintaining a neat, clean, and welcoming environment for the public; performs regular library walk‑throughs to ensure safety and cleanliness.
Shelves items; performs shelf reading, straightening, and displays (face‑outs).
Accepts payments for printing, copying, meeting rooms, and lost books.
Aids patrons with problem transactions and relays library policies and procedures to the public as needed.
Utilizes the circulation module of the library management software to complete circulation tasks.
Performs related and other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of circulation, reference, and other patron service principles.
Knowledge of library technology.
Knowledge of materials preparation and repair principles.
Knowledge of computers and job‑related software programs.
Knowledge of library policies and procedures.
Skill in resolving technology issues for staff and the public.
Skill in interpersonal and public relations.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in performing basic cash register procedures and daily reconciliation of cash drawer.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects and climbs a stepstool. The employee must push and pull heavy book trucks.
The work is typically performed in a library.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
