Assistant Director, Product Analysis - Commercial Auto Underwriting

The Global Risk Solutions (GRS) North America Auto Underwriting Performance team is hiring an Assistant Director/Director to support our Commercial Auto portfolio across GRS North America. This technical professional works closely with cross‑functional partners (liability performance, auto product, actuarial & analytics, data science, as well as Office of Underwriting and segment underwriting teams) to drive, shape, and monitor the profitability and growth of the Auto portfolio.
Responsibilities
Analyze data on drivers of performance and execution of underwriting strategies across Commercial Auto. Identify and investigate noteworthy observations, translating findings into clear, actionable insights.
Monitor and report‑out on performance, deviations from plan, along with corresponding insights/trends to cross‑functional stakeholders and the North America Auto Product Board; prepare clear, decision‑oriented materials and executive updates.
Investigate noteworthy portfolio trends and deviations (rate/retention, frequency/severity, mix, limit/deductible structures, exposure and telematics metrics), identify causal drivers, propose hypotheses/tests, and execute pilots with clear success criteria.
Develop recommendations for portfolio shaping (e.g., areas to grow, fix, or maintain) based on analysis and discussion with partners; socialize a cohesive portfolio story with segments and leadership to drive awareness and action.
Support competitive intelligence, pricing and product strategy research, and market monitoring to inform strategic positioning and go‑forward underwriting strategies.
Create and support processes and tools that enable proactive portfolio management and repeatable, scalable monitoring as the Auto underwriting ecosystem continues to mature.
Partner with field underwriting to translate portfolio insights into underwriting appetite, rules, and execution; support guardrails, referral criteria, and playbook refinements to improve consistency and outcomes.
Draft and maintain auto technical underwriting reference material as needed.
Lead and coordinate cross‑functional initiatives to implement portfolio and product changes; build workplans, align stakeholders, manage timelines, and track outcomes to ensure measurable impact on profitability and growth.
Serve as a technical liaison to Product, Actuarial/Analytics, Data Science, and Underwriting Technology to support research, testing, and maintenance of Auto underwriting and product capabilities (e.g., territory models, fleet tiering, mileage/UBI data, advanced location and driving attributes).
Qualifications
Knowledge of Commercial Auto underwriting, products, pricing, and rules is required.
Professional curiosity, strategic mindset, with strong analytical/critical thinking skills.
Track record for making effective data‑driven decisions.
Objective and results‑oriented with a track record of delivering results.
Strong planning, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to build clear narratives, project plans, and influence across functions and levels.
Demonstrated ability to lead cross‑functional projects and influence without direct authority; comfortable operating autonomously, proactively probing partner needs, diagnosing causal drivers of performance, and soliciting feedback on potential portfolio/product initiatives.
Experience with telematics/usage‑based insurance, fleet segmentation, territory models, and advanced location/driver data is a plus!
