The Police Dispatcher dispatches routine and emergency law enforcement services; coordinates emergency medical and fire services with local agencies; answers public inquiries about university events, operations and locations; activates emergency messaging; monitors alarm systems and dispatches responders when necessary; monitors camera systems and video systems to identify suspicious activity and directs responders to investigate; and provides other general support to the law enforcement mission of the University of Miami Police Department. The Police Dispatcher performs work at demanding levels that includes multiple tasks under emergency conditions where speed and accuracy are significant factors in achieving the Department’s mission. The Police Dispatcher position is designated as essential personnel and will continue to work during periods where the University may suspend normal operations due to events such as severe weather, natural disasters, special events and/or hazardous situations. The Police Dispatcher plays a vital role in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment. The position has significant responsibility for life and safety on the Coral Gables campus.**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.* Properly categorizes incoming calls for service.* Initiates proper response and/or routing of calls received at the Police Communications Center.* Operates telecommunications equipment to dispatch law enforcement, firefighting and/or rescue crews and equipment. Continues to process information until responding units arrive on the scene.* Communicates information to vehicle and field personnel. Summons Coral Gables Police Department and Coral Gables Fire Department services upon request.* Conducts immediate record checks upon request.* Receives and screens routine calls for assistance or information from the public, businesses, and other government agencies. Answers general questions or refers calls to proper individual/agency.* Performs front desk receptionist duties when required.* Maintains and updates computerized and written records. Writes activity summaries, compiles data and prepares reports.
