Overview
The Department of History in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University invites applications for a full-time tenured Associate Professor of Environmental History, with an emphasis on questions of law, justice, or governance, to begin in the fall of 2026. Applications are welcome from scholars addressing any time period or place, with a goal of extending department strengths in multiple research areas and engaging in intellectual exchange connected to borderlands studies. The successful candidate will maintain an ambitious, productive research agenda; teach two courses per semester; recruit and train outstanding students; and participate in university and professional affairs. This position is part of a cluster hire supported by the Mellon Foundation. Hired faculty are appointed in their home departments and undergo review and promotion there. They are also expected to contribute to the interdisciplinary environmental undergraduate program and to be affiliated with the Environmental and Sustainability Initiative and the Race and Ethnic Studies Institute (RESI). For their first three years, this hire will be identified as “Mellon-RESI Scholar,” aligning with the Mellon-funded LatinTX environmental justice initiative to foster collaborative scholarship across the humanities and advance just responses to environmental injustices in borderland communities in Texas and beyond. Additional resources support the cluster hire faculty individually and in collaboration. Context and Institutional Context
