Position Description The Mary Kirkland Center for Lupus Research at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) on the Upper East Side of New York City has an available paid position for an in-person, full-time Research Assistant starting in May/June 2023. The coordinator will be responsible for the clinical research projects of the Physician-in-Chief Emeritus Dr. Mary K Crow and the clinical trials of the Lupus Clinic Co-Chief Dr. Kyriakos Kirou, both of whom study the diseases of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, or lupus) and lupus nephritis.

This person will play an essential coordinating role in HSS's clinical trials and studies in lupus. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: patient screening, consenting, and recruitment into clinical trials, patient data collection and organization, management of regulatory data, submission of reports to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), patient sample management, and interaction with pharmaceutical representatives to coordinate industry-sponsored clinical trials. Opportunities for mentorship, authorship, and presentation at academic conferences will be available.

The Research Assistant will closely interact with patients, nurses, and physicians to identify patients suitable for research studies and to manage ongoing projects. The assistant will also be expected to do some light processing of patient samples such as venipuncture, centrifuging, pipetting, and aliquoting.

Responsibilities Responsibilities include but are not limited to patient screening, consenting and recruitment into clinical trials, data collection and organization, regulatory data management, IRB report submission, and coordination with industry-sponsored trials. The role involves collaboration with clinicians, nurses, and researchers to support lupus research projects.

Qualifications

Candidates should have at least a Bachelor’s degree.

Background in a science or health-related field preferred.

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required.

Previous experience with data management, lab work, logistical management and/or patient interaction preferred.

Computer literate: Microsoft Word, Excel, data entry.

Minimum two-year commitment strongly desired.

This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates who plan to apply to medical school, but we are also open to other qualified individuals interested in healthcare and/or clinical research.
