Overview
The Public Defender Corporation for the 9th Judicial Circuit covering Boone and Lincoln Counties is seeking a skilled and motivated attorney to join our legal team. As the Title 4E Abuse and Neglect Attorney, you will be responsible for providing legal advice and representation to clients involved in West Virginia’s Child Abuse and Neglect System. You will be helping adult clients to retain their rights to their children in proceedings filed in Boone and Lincoln Counties. We have a strong support staff including a recovery coach and parenting navigator to assist you with finding your clients the needed programs and support your client may need to successfully navigate the abuse and neglect process. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about the law and wants to make a positive impact in the lives of others while serving the people of Southern West Virginia. Responsibilities
Conduct legal research and analysis on various issues. Read and become familiar with the laws and court rules in abuse and neglect proceedings. Prepare and draft legal documents, such as motions, orders, and client letters. Represent clients in court proceedings, including preliminary, adjudicatory, and dispositional hearings. Negotiate settlements for improvement periods on behalf of clients. Provide legal advice and guidance to clients. Collaborate with colleagues on complex cases. Stay up-to-date with changes in the law and legal precedents. Skills
Strong legal administrative skills, including organization and time management. Strong communication skills and the ability to present complex legal ideas in everyday language. Proficient in conducting thorough legal research. Ability to negotiate effectively on behalf of clients. Experience in legal drafting, including a strong background in motions practice. Familiarity with legal research tools such as Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis. Ability to litigate cases in court. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
