Overview
Job Posting: Assistant District Attorney / Grant Special Assignment – Organization/Office: Kansas County District Attorney's Office. Job Type: Exempt. Position Summary: As an Assistant District Attorney / Special Assignment, you will be responsible for all aspects of prosecuting complex or specialized cases, focusing on Sex Assault and Domestic related. Your duties will encompass a wide range of responsibilities, including case preparation and courtroom presentation. You will interview witnesses, conduct in-depth legal research, and craft persuasive legal documents such as exhibits, journal entries, motions, orders, and search warrants. A key aspect of this role involves strategic negotiation with defense attorneys and the critical responsibility of filing criminal cases. You will also play a vital role in appellate work, including preparing and arguing cases before the Kansas State Court and the Kansas Supreme Court, drafting comprehensive briefs, and diligently tracking the progress of appeals. Furthermore, you will collaborate with community partners to assess and evaluate defendant risk and needs.
Responsibilities
Thoroughly reviews police reports and collaborates with detectives to determine prosecution viability. Coordinates with case workers, hospitals, and community organizations regarding placement and evaluation evidence.
Prepares for and presents evidence in trials across the Criminal, Juvenile, and/or Specialty Court Divisions.
Acts as a vital liaison between attorneys, police officers, judges, probation officers, court staff, victims, witnesses, family members, hospitals, community organizations, and individuals seeking information or assistance.
Engages in strategic negotiations with defense attorneys to assess case strength, likelihood of conviction/placement, and potential harm to self and society.
Collaborates with attorneys to assign cases and schedule trial settings to ensure timely resolution.
Performs a diverse range of administrative tasks for the District Attorney’s Office, including report review, subpoena preparation oversight, ensuring due diligence, maintaining case file databases, and other related duties.
Files criminal, juvenile, child in need of care, and care & treatment cases, which include reviewing police reports, filing search warrants, and assessing the validity of legal charges.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Qualifications
Juris Doctorate (JD) and a Kansas license to practice law or the ability to obtain one.
Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations.
Constitutional, criminal and civil law procedures.
Rules of evidence.
Court procedures and etiquette.
Proficient in:
Interpreting laws and regulations; Negotiating and presenting cases; Performing legal research; Preparing and reviewing legal documents; Communication and interpersonal skills necessary for effective interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the public, etc., to exchange information and receive work directions.
Preferred Qualifications
Five years of prosecution experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Specific experience in prosecuting domestic violence or sex offense cases, appellate experience, or experience working on special projects.
Licensing Requirements
License to practice law in the State of Kansas.
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit for extended periods.
Ability to use a computer for extended periods.
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Incumbents may be subject to travel.
Position typically requires reaching, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Working Conditions
