Overview
GAAP and Investments Accounting Leader role at Westfield Insurance. The GAAP and Investments Accounting Leader is responsible for leading the teams that deliver the timely and accurate completion of internal and external financial reporting. The role manages a team of expert professionals, team leads, managers and unit managers. The Accounting Leader sets priorities, provides coaching, and manages the department's workload and budget. Additionally, the role regularly reviews processes to identify opportunities for improvement and transformation and ensures the accuracy and completeness of GAAP and statutory financial results. May be responsible for leading significant strategic projects, provide direction in specialized accounting areas such as Reinsurance, Investments and Benefits Plans or consult on cross functional initiatives that are beyond the controllership functional area.
Job Responsibilities
Oversees the preparation, review, analysis and filing of GAAP and Statutory financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements and ensures that financial statements are accurate, complete, and in compliance with accounting and regulatory standards. Prepares, records, analyzes and reports on complex accounting transactions and ensures the integrity of accounting records for completeness, accuracy and compliance with accounting policies and principles. Leads professionals and leaders who are responsible for the timely and accurate completion of all the internal and external reporting for the property and casualty insurance companies (Statutory basis and GAAP basis), as well as non-insurance companies (GAAP basis). Develops controls and performs reviews to ensure the integrity and use of various software applications, focusing on financial, expense allocation, annual statement software, investment and reinsurance systems. Acts as primary liaison between the Controller's group and all non-insurance affiliates providing accounting assistance and support as needed. Ensures compliance with GAAP and Statutory accounting standards as they relate to corporate and insurance accounting, including research, review and technical interpretation. Implements new accounting standards and ensures that financial reporting processes are updated accordingly. Reviews all processes regularly and identifies opportunities for improvements and transformation to ensure that financial reporting and accounting is efficient and effective. Collaborates with other departments to ensure financial data and analysis are available to support strategic decision-making. Responds to inquiries from state insurance departments, internal and external auditors and other regulatory agencies. Owns accountability for talent management and navigation of employee related issues that impact morale and work environment to ensure a high performing team including hiring and selection, succession planning, performance and compensation management, and employee development and career coaching as required. Manages priorities and workload distribution and removes barriers that impede progress.
Job Qualifications
10+ years of experience in Financial Accounting/Reporting or a related field. Bachelor\'s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field and/or commensurate experience.
Location
Hybrid – defined as working three or more days per week in the office if the employee’s residence is within 50 miles of Westfield Center, OH; or Remote – if the employee resides more than 50 miles from Westfield Center, OH.
