General Definition of Work Performs protective service work to maintain safety and security within the facility. Provides information to other facilities by email, phone or written form. Handles complaints, settles disputes and resolves conflicts between inmates. Ensures all paperwork is correct for all new intake of inmates and all discharges of inmates. Completes knowledge in the RMS system, Dynamic Imaging, Predatory Offender registration system, radio usage, telephone system first aid, CPR and Minnesota Repository of Arrest Photos. Controls extremely stressful situations while remaining calm to provide aid and assistance. Has intimate understanding of the Use of Force Statute and the ability to apply that statute to each situation and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under limited supervision of the Jail Administrator.
Responsibilities
Maintain safety and security within the secure perimeter of the 80‑bed jail facility, monitor all 100+ cameras, control all electronic door locks and other security equipment.
Interact directly with inmates while conducting wellbeing checks, documenting all activities and intervening in all physical and nonphysical altercations.
Properly file all paperwork for Public Defender Applications, community connections paperwork, PREA paperwork, off‑site follow‑up care and statement of rights.
Complete formal inmate counts, handle all inmate movement for STS and Huber Law, update all court information in LETG and conduct cell inspections.
Collect all bonds and cash bail, distribute medication, scan and distribute mail and change out laundry bags.
Assist the public with video visitation, provide technical support and answer questions regarding court times, legal process and next steps for release.
Contact victims before inmates are released and log into RMS.
Coordinate activities with other divisions and government agencies to keep up with court dates, treatment and appointments.
Process new adult arrestees, suspects, charges greater than misdemeanor and arrested juveniles.
Assign proper classification, fingerprinting detail, assign inmate number and proper sizing of uniform.
Escort inmate movement within and outside of the secure portion of the jail including medical facilities and mental health appointments.
Document, maintain proper inventory and store all personal property that inmates have brought into the facility.
Perform appropriate duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of the security, rules, regulations and procedures of the institution; general knowledge of the methods of operating various communications systems including two‑way radios; comprehensive skill communicating using various communication systems; comprehensive skill keeping accurate and detailed records; comprehensive skill completing records checks; thorough knowledge of inmate medical records and data work fingerprinting system, dynamic imaging, handcuffs and leg shackles, X26 taser and restraint chair operations.
Education and Experience Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. Preferred Qualifications:
Associates/technical degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements Requires occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; walks, speaks and hears; lifts, pushes, pulls and balances; prepares and analyzes written or computer data; occasionally exposed to fumes, electrical shock and bloodborne pathogens; generally in a moderately noisy location.
Special Requirements Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the State of Minnesota. Must submit to fingerprinting through the FBI and MN BCA and obtain and maintain required certifications.
Salary and Benefits Salary range is $26.41 - $37.37 per hour plus health insurance, life insurance, retirement plan, vacation/sick/holiday pay and many other voluntary benefits.
