Responsibilities

The jobholder is a certified police officer with the power of arrest who responds to students, faculty/staff and citizen calls for service on an assigned campus, enforcing criminal and traffic laws, local ordinances, and college rules, regulations and directives.

Investigates and writes reports of incidents and conducts preliminary investigations; investigates traffic accidents on campus.

P patrols campus buildings and grounds; enforces parking and towing regulations; locks and unlocks buildings; responds to medical emergencies; collects and secures evidence; testifies in court; serves criminal papers.

Works with school and community policing programs to solve problems that generate crime and to identify and solve safety and security issues.

May work any shift on any campus and may be required to be on call when not on duty.

Education and Experience

Education Required: The minimum education requirement is a high school graduate or GED; must meet NC CJSTC requirements.

Experience Required: Completion of an accredited Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program and ability to be certified as a police officer by the NC CJSTC.

Education Preferred: Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Experience Preferred: Prior experience as a Law Enforcement Officer; preferably in an educational institutional setting.

KSA (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations.

Thorough knowledge of departmental directives and court procedures.

Knowledge of college campuses and community policing concepts.

Skilled in the use of all law enforcement equipment; able to exercise sound judgment in routine and emergency situations.

Strong communication skills, both oral and written; ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, staff and the public in a college environment.

Ability to work as a team member and to make sound, independent decisions.

Ability to operate campus police vehicles under all conditions, including emergencies; report to work during inclement weather and emergency situations.

Physical ability to restrain individuals when necessary; ability to lift, bend, climb, and run as required; ability to see, hear and speak clearly.

KSA Preferred

Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations.

Knowledge and ability to apply the principles of community policing.

Department/Job Specific Requirements

As a condition of employment, must complete the GTCC Campus Police Field Training program after employment.

Must pass a comprehensive background investigation as mandated by NC CJSTC.

Must pass a comprehensive psychological evaluation, medical examination, drug test and any other tests required by NC CJSTC for police officers.

Must complete college training matrix after employment (e.g., CPR, HazMat, safety, first aid, EMS, anti-harassment, data protection, NIMS, etc.).

Must not have committed or been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.

Minimum age 21 years; mobility to patrol campuses; ability to qualify yearly with departmental weapons; valid NC Driver\'s License required.
