Overview Organization Overview: The Goddard Riverside Community Center (Goddard Riverside) and the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center (Isaacs Center) are established Manhattan-based community organizations serving about 30,000 New Yorkers. We are two of New York City's leading human services organizations meeting the needs of children, youth and families, homeless individuals, and older adults across Manhattan and NYC. The Isaacs Center focuses on the needs of children and low-income families, out-of-school and out-of-work youth, and aging New Yorkers. Our centers operate in East Harlem and Yorkville, delivering impactful, innovative, intergenerational programs.

Program Description:

Goddard Riverside has an annual operating budget of approximately $50 million and provides services across Manhattan and NYC.

Position Summary The primary function of the Activity Specialist is to plan group activities that provide a safe and engaging learning environment for participants of the Stanley M. Isaacs Beacon program. The program is delivered through a comprehensive menu of services, including project-based learning that integrates education enrichment, visual arts, clubs, trips, and sports.

Schedule Monday to Friday, September 16, 2024 – June 13, 2025 (some holidays, evenings and Saturdays). 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. 17-20 hours per week.

Salary Salary Range: $30.00 per hour

Responsibilities

Demonstrate professionalism and leadership.

Experience teaching sports, coaching, or other physical activities.

Experience implementing physical activities in school-based, after-school, camp, and/or community-based settings.

Promote physical literacy; motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding to value and engage in physical activities for life.

Deliver sports activities and develop a sense of community during afterschool through sports lessons and a project aligned with monthly themes.

Supervise youth and participate in activities by building positive relationships with youth and peers, serving as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication, behavior and the organization’s mission, philosophy, and goals.

Work with children on developmental and emotional issues; encourage program participation and social skills development.

Instruct participants on sport exercises and developing a healthy lifestyle.

Enforce program rules, identify and respond to participant behavior issues, and carry out corrective action when needed by identifying and resolving conflicts and behavioral problems.

Communicate with parents about participants’ experiences and report concerns to the Program Director.

Know and enforce all emergency procedures and follow safety guidelines for all program areas, including ensuring children’s safety and whereabouts at all times.

Inform the supervisor of notable incidents occurring during program time.

Ensure all children are picked up by appropriate adults on their contact sheet.

Attend staff training, weekly meetings, case conferences, and supervision meetings.

Teach a range of sports including basketball, soccer, football, and volleyball.

Other duties as required and assigned by the Program Director, ADED and/or DED.

Qualifications

Minimum BA/BS degree or current college student preferred.

At least 2 years of experience working with elementary and/or middle school students in an after-school or summer camp setting.

Knowledgeable and experienced in teaching and instructing youth in sports and healthy lifestyles.

Ability to work collaboratively; strong commitment to youth development and the mission.

Positive demeanor, sense of humor, and passion for youth development.

Ability to pass background checks including fingerprinting and Sex Offender Registry, and be physically able to work with children (doctor’s signed consent including TB screening).

CPR/First Aid Certification a plus.

Experience fostering a learning environment that stimulates children's creative growth and development.

Professionalism and leadership to work as part of a team with staff and 15-25 youth in grades K-8.

Experience working with children with developmental and emotional issues; encourage participation and social skills development.

Ability to plan and lead activities and events; supervise organized games and escort groups to activities and field trips; carry out other tasks as required.

Enforce program rules and safety guidelines; follow emergency procedures; ensure children’s safety and whereabouts.

Attend staff trainings and weekly meetings; other duties as required.

Skills, Knowledge, And Abilities

Ability to follow curriculum and be responsible, reliable, and punctual.

Create and implement plans for group participation; effectively supervise children.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements

Frequent bending, kneeling, and walking; able to carry 50 lbs or more.

Working Conditions

MTA travel throughout the city and for recreational trips with youth.

Outdoor/Indoor work; alternating between standing and sitting.
