The Conductor/Engineer position is responsible to control and coordinate the train movements while switching railcars in the yard of a railroad, industrial plant, or similar location to facilitate the unloading and loading of railcars in a safe and efficient manner to service customers. This is a manual labor position requiring proficiency in the skills, duties, and requirements described within the training and introductory period. Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance. Follow written and verbal directions to complete tasks on schedule. Read, write, and communicate in English; understand basic math. Learn from directions, observations, and mistakes and apply procedures using good judgment. Read switching orders from designated person. Supervise and coordinate the activities of train crews. Receive oral or written instructions indicating which cars are to be switched. Notify engineer of switching orders and identify which cars are to be moved to specified locations in the yard, using radio, telephone, verbal or hand signals. Talk to crew or yard workers via radio to give or receive switching information. Confer with train dispatcher via radio to issue or receive information or instructions concerning stops, delays, or oncoming trains. Give instructions to throw track switches and to couple and uncouple cars. Assist workers with throwing switches or performing other switching operations as needed. Turn hand brake or apply and release handbrakes as required. Observe track conditions to detect obstructions. Maintain records of cars switched, including number, origin, destination, and cargo. Coordinate activities of switching crew from locomotive cab, caboose, or control tower as needed. Raise coupling lever to couple or uncouple cars. Throw track switches to facilitate shunting of cars and signal Engineer to move cars using lantern, arm signals, or radio. Connect air hoses to cars when making up trains by bending and applying force. Set warning signals (flares, flags, lanterns, torpedoes) at front and rear of train during emergency stops to warn oncoming trains. Observe signals from other crew members while in the locomotive cab. Make minor repairs to couplings and air hoses; report equipment requiring major repairs. Communicate switching information with the Engineer via radio. Perform other duties as requested or required. Machines, Tools, Special Equipment, Personal Protective Equipment Used

Hammers, ratchets, chisel, pry bar, wrenches, and brushes. PPE: hard hat, vest, safety glasses, FR clothing, gloves, steel-toed boots. Education And Experience

High school education or GED. Ability to pass training and required testing. Work Environment

The work environment is representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this job. Team members are regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and elements, noise, and fumes from gas, oil, and grease. Note
