General Description of Position The high school assistant coach is responsible to the athletic director/building principal for the planning coordinating and directing of those specific athletic activities to which he/she has been assigned.
Responsibilities
Be responsible to the building principal and the school Director of Physical Education and Athletics
Establish objectives for the program and develop a plan for the implementation of these objectives
Develop his/her part of the athletic program to the utmost, realizing that the main objective of the program is participation and friendly competition, and the won-lost records are of secondary importance
Recognize athletic activities as an integral part of a well-balanced educational program. A coach must coordinate closely and of his/her athletic activities that might conflict with the normal school program
Provide vigorous activities that will develop the physique, increase the efficiency of the cardio-vascular system, and contribute to the development of physical skills
Develop in students the principles of leadership and good citizenship through experiences in sportsmanship
Foster self-expression, self-confidence, and self-discipline through physical, emotional, and social experiences
Be knowledgeable of those rules, regulations and policies as set forth by the Hammond School Board, the School Administration, the Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, and the Indiana Lake Shore Conference
Know his or her, part in preparing an athletic budget, selecting, and hiring officials, requisitioning equipment, and supplies, providing team transportation, arranging schedules and the various other duties necessary for the efficient operation of an athletic program
When injuries occur in a sport, follow the outlined procedures "Caring for An Injured Athlete" which can be found the Handbook for Interscholastic Athletics under the heading "Athletic Injuries"
Ensure that every boy and girl participating in his or her sport has had the required physical examination and has the required IHSAA "Parent & Physician's Certificate" signed and on file in the principal's office. No boy or girl is allowed to participate in practices or games until this certificate is signed and returned to the school.
Work closely with the school Director of Physical Education and Athletics in checking player eligibility, making out eligibility lists, and sending the IHSAA entry lists in on time
Work with the Director of Athletics in developing plans for issuing and receiving play equipment. The coach is jointly responsible with the school athletic director for the condition and disposition of all equipment assigned to his sports
Develop sound public relations with parents and newspaper and radio personnel
Attend departmental staff meetings, clinics, and other types of professional growth activities as approved by the principal
Cooperate with other members of the athletic staff in establishing sound rules for conduct, dress, and general appearance that will be conducive to the development of clean-cut young Americans
Qualifications
Expert knowledge of the sport being taught
A thorough understanding of the participants: physically, mentally, and emotionally
Skill in the art of teaching the fundamentals of the sport
Desirable character and personality traits
High moral standards
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with pupils, parents, custodians, officials, staff members and the administration
A thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations which pertain to the instructor's areas of responsibility
Available to supervise activities beyond the school day
Other duties/responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
Employment Information
Personnel are recommended annually by the building principal and approved by the Superintendent. Compensation will be determined by the School City of Hammond agreement
Performance of the job will be evaluated annually
